Hi, i´m late, i´m late!
After viewing the amazing images of this challenge, i´ve got inspired and wanted to join the party. Here´s a sketch of what i have in mind. It´s a free version of a drawing by Whelan.

In the begining, the rat was bald, and god said "what a nasty creature we´ve got here!"

Thanks for the replies! Oz and Gabe i like to work under pression, i can feel the deadline day upon my head...

Vancorso gracias por tus ánimos! Estoy esperando a ver cómo queda tu imagen final (no sé mucho sobre manga ni había oido hablar de Nausicaä, pero tu hombre patata ;) se sale).

Any suggestions about how to create the hair?
(i´m using Max 4.0 and the Sahg Hair plugin)

Shag will be perfect for adding the hair in. Here's just a basic 'rule-of-thumb' with hair lengths:
Keep the hair shorter and flatter (no more than 2 - 5 degrees) to the skin on the head, legs, and base of the tail. The hair can be longer and stand further (10 - 15 degrees) out from the body along the chest, sides, and belly. And the hair running down the back should be the longest and come off the skin at almost a 30 - 45 degree angle.

Hope that helps.

Wow ZrO-1, thanks a lot!! I´ll follow your indications step by step.

This is a base texture test, bottom and back legs not yet texturized, and i have to adjust the colors.

Ah its a shame you built that cuz i found one for free on 3dup.com, damn near the same one too. Heres a render of the scene, without any changes made to anything:curious:

Hi, AroundtheFur (curious nickname he he). In fact i had an old image that i used for reference, it´s of the same model you´ve found (the image i´ve got says it´s from REM infografica, it´s a sample of the Metareyes plugin, you can see all the muscles under the skin, more images here (http://www.reyes-infografica.net/remmeta_p.php)). I´ve used photo references too, but the pose and overall shape its from that image.
But i´ve modelled the rat by myself, the challenge´s rules says you must use your own models.

I like the base texture on the skin. You did a really good job on the modeling. It is very close to the image you based it on. Good stuff!

Thanks ZrO-1!! Here´s the final result with shag hair. I´ve used four different hair types and conf for the head and hands, neck and legs, back and sides and intermediate areas; using the angles you´ve said. Wow i´ve learned a lot about sub materials and id´s materials. Let me know what you guys think about the final rat. I´ll start the riders on friday, i hope.

coming along nicely....the model is very nice..I'd like to see the fur a little more dense, so the texture doesn't show through as much...looking great though...keep it coming!!

I think style-wise you have the hair perfect, but I agree that it needs to be more dense. I like it on the face as it is..and the hindquarters or rump area looks pretty good. I think that it really needs more fur though on the back. I would double the density from the base of the neck on back to the rump. Give that a try, I think it might just push the image that little bit further into sheer perfection.

Ops, time is nearly over, so i should start...
This is the rat (a double haired class for you) ready to be rided.
Argh, im gonna be working on this until i finish or die, i love to waste my time till the day before the deadline, it´s so exciting.

I´m doing a new head, any suggestion for accesories/clothes?
I know textures stink, but i´ve got no much time...

The rat looks awesome. I like the saddle.

I think the textures on your guy don't look so bad. A tiny bit of tweaking and they should look great. As far as accessories: how about a quiver of arrows for the guy to go with the cross bow on the rat?

Mmhhhhh, perhaps i´ve been too enthusiastic, the shag hair render with hair lights took too much time, so i´ll go for a simplier scene, just one rider and the rat. Working on the environment.

strange. the rider looks a bit flattened and the bones must be broken.

but i have to say, it will become a very cool picture.:)

Yep, Sad you´re right, i´ve got some problems adjusting the biped and that stuff, but i´ve got no more time to fix it out.

Bufff, one hour before the deadline (i think). Final version:
