Maybe you should post a picture showing all the different pieces of a Katana cause habaki, seppa and tsuba don't say anything to me. ( though i know they are parts of the handle )
Very interesting blade texture. Looks like the cutting edge is made of ice or ceramic molten into the iron of the blade.
I would normally quess the cutting edge is like a mirror but your's is inverted.
Very nice protector too! Is there a crane in it?

thx so far :)
here's some detail about the tsuba (the hand protector):

(it's irregularities are wanted)
more to come...
nice work, can't wait to see the rest of it.

ok, time for some update:
http://www.gabrielsilver.com/wip/images/jihada2.jpg
i updated the texture a bit, addind jihada (the "grain" you see on the blade, which results from the process of folding and forging again and again with two different types of steel) and changed the map blending between the backside and the special hardened front (showing the hamon, the brighter area)
to be continued...

I like the tsuba's design but it does not look like it belongs on a katana. Maybe when you make the handle it will fit. I think it may be the design that is not very Japanese. It just seems out of place somewhat. Keep it up!

Cool, so far that is the most realistic 3d katana I've seen. Nice job on the tsuba, although I think it would look better if you made the fillets more pronounced, the edges of it look a bit too sharp to me. I also liked the shape of the first hamon much much better. And lastly, I don't think the hada ever goes past the hamon line onto the edge, although I might be wrong, I've only seen pictures.
Looking forward to the rest of it. :)

Pretty straight forward weapon! The design on the hamon is very good. I like the angles in your renders. I'd like to see the handle though. Keep up the good work.

time for the next update :)
did some mesh-doodling and got at least temporary meshes for the rest of the handle exept tsuka ito and menuki.

http://www.gabrielsilver.com/wip/images/whole.jpg
the next big things will be corrections of the temp meshes and
modelling of the tsuka ito (the strings wrapped around the handle, including the knots will be modelled, right :D)
some texture work to do, too...
to be continued...

That blade looks really nice.
What is the handle meant to be made of? I mean the grip part?
It looks like terry toweling at the moment...
Love the design of the hand protector!!

thx :)
the yellowish material of the grip which will finally be wound by cotton tapes is called "same" and is just the skin of a ray (fish).

Hey, the same looks great! Cellular noise? That last render with the whole sword looks outstanding, can't wait to see the tsuka ito on it (try making it leather).

Wow, now it looks grat with the handle (but it is a bit too bright). I can't wait to see the full model.

Looks not too bad ;-)
Shouldn't the "wood" follow the curve?
Is the rayskin going all around the handle or is it just on both sides but not bend around? ... maybe I only know some cheap PaulChen "swords" ;-P

thx for c&c so far.
the handle follows the curvature of the blade, you just don't see it from this angle. and the ray skin: there are two possible ways of applying the same: either the traditional way - one sheet of rayskin wrapped around or two separated sheets of skin, which is the "cheaper" and easier way.
here an orthographic top view of the whole sword:
http://www.gabrielsilver.com/wip/images/ortho.jpg
(i'm still working on the shape thou)
anyway, there's no need to model a border to the same, no matter if it's one or two sheets - the whole thing will be wrapped in either leather or cloth, at least the sides will be 100% covered.
i guess you know this site, too:

With "wood" I actually meant the grain of the blade, because it looks a bit like the default max procedural wood texture.
I cant wait to see it finished... will there be a fitting Wakisashi and a Tanto as well?
Keep on forging ;-)

ah, you meant the jihada. well, it'j just the max standard wood map, right. in the final tex it will follow the curvature of the blade, as i will paint the map (which will be a pain in the a**, because it has to be at least 15kx2k for the fine details to be still visible)
still working on it, update soon :D
btw, sorry for my bad english :(

being a lover of swords (especially the katana) - this is looking awesome! The lightweight 'look' of the sword is just perfect, something that's usually missed in most models.

minor update now, although it almost drove me insane ;)
unwrapped the blade and did a 20.000 x 900 pixel map for the jihada which now (hi Wolf S ;) ) follows the shape of the blade.
the next update will hopefully be the completion of the handle or at least a bigger step forward to it.

Solid sword you have there. It looks like the details on the hand protector is really really good. Swan the symbol of Graceful ;)

i have one question. With what methode you did that waves ??
GabrielSilver
11-23-2003, 07:46 PM
thx.
niCer: it's simple for basic waves... just open up a new file and fill it with a line pattern, leaving some space between the lines. then add a distortion filter adding ripples to the lines. if that's not wavy enough, rotate the image 90° and repeat the ripple filter with slightly changed values.
