Hello all,

I recently upgrading to Maya 5 and one of the first things I noticed was that under the Artisan sculpt tool , either polygon or NURBS, that the reflect toggle box under the Stroke tab was "ghosted" or unselectable ... I tried reseting the Maya prefs but it did not seem to do it .... is there something I'm missing??? Big Thanks

dunno. what exactly does that reflect tool do?

If you are painting a NURBS surface, reflect can work as a symetrical tools base on U or V direction. So what you do in one side will be reflected to the other side.

In polygon models, you need to change first paint mode (under misc tab) to use UV Texture Paint instead of Projective Paint to use reflection. And it also mean that you have to layout your UV first before you use artisan.

Imagine if you are sculpting a head, then you want to sculpt both side of the head (left and right) simultanously. This reflect function will help.

that sounds useful, so why cant you have this reflect tool work on the transform tools?

???? transform tools ????

Are you saying using move tools, rotate tools, and scale tools, and operation from one side vertex reflected on the other side?.

I believe there are some scripts at highend allow you to do it. It would be nice if someone can write it as an API and create a symmetric node. So at least we got a node to play with.

You could just use a instance to see the other side update.

Yeah but the problem with instanced geometry is that you have a seperated mesh - which is no good for creating blend shapes. I will check out highend for that script but I think somebody told me that it was not very good...

With Byrons poly tools and the proportional modelling it offers blend shapes are much easier to create, maybe I should speak to him to create a mirror node too...
