Hi all,
I am finally starting to 'play' with modelling after gaining a base understanding from various books and tutorials.
One thing that is really holding me back is edge termination...
Grant Warwick's hard surface tutorials (which are brilliant btw) were my first introduction to modelling. I learnt the basics of what is needed to create hard edges and how to create different shapes. Which was great whilst following the tutorials, but now I'm looking at creating my own models I'm getting pretty stuck straight away
I am almost paranoid about making sure I stick to quads, so I find myself staring at a junction of edges and hoping my brain will unravel the mess into a group of quads!
For instance:

I worked this one out like this:

Which I think is about right???
But when I try and get a bit more adventurous, and start cutting into a model like this:

I am completely at a loss of what to do in order to terminate it
Are there any specific tutorials or videos or anything that someone could point me in the direction of that explains methods and common techniques for edge termination?
It would help me massively
On a side note, as a total novice to this game - should I even be concerned with quads and termination, or should I just get ideas down and 'play' without getting bogged down in what the pro's might do?
Any input welcome,
Thanks
