I decided to go through and model these two based on the early cartoon styles from the 80-90's cartoon of the Teenage mutant ninja turtles.
The modeling was done using lightwave 3d...
foot soldier has 1510 tris
leo has 2140 tris

I loved the turtles. They rocked!!
I'm going from memory here but i remember the turtles being slightly more muscular, leo here is looking very thin and frail. I'd also make the hands and feet a bit bigger and just generally beef the volume of the model up slightly.
Also, is the textured finished? I'm guessing no cos its basically flat colour areas on the model. But a good start, it'll be cool to see them finished.

I have to agree with the size adjustment to the hands and feet, what a HUGE difference it's made on leo! take a look below.. I did minor tweaking to his over all form. Any better or do you feel it needs more? Thank ya for the comments!

Hey Kelly, how ya doin?
Is me, Clint Wallace.
Overall, your model looks good. I think that the upper thighs are a little slim. I also think that the legs look as if they are too far apart where they join at the pelvis. You may want to look at some human photo references and model with them in the background. Of course there are obvious differences between a TMNT and a human, but it might help out with proportions. I'd be curious to see your reference, especially for the shell since a turtle shell completly surrounds the body and doesn't leave the sides open.

Oh, here's a few references I have of the turtles, they're pics of what I've found searching online (of course)...
From what I do recall about the turtles, they were only 4 ft high. In Addition to the cartoon, the foot soldiers were shown skinny, and mindless (robots). I tried really hard finding more pics of past foot soldiers, and some were shots of the toys, but in my opinion, I didn't really like the toy as a reference.
Do you all know of places for TMNT pics? I found plent of recent cartoon style, but I have to model a low poly version krang too... and I didn't see him in the new storyline... :?

That's really starting to take form now, good job! Only comments I have are the arms still could be a little bit more muscular. The wrist pads appear to be on the wrong polygons, I think they might look better a little bit further up the arm, instead of going onto the palm it looks like, and the elbow pads don't make it around the arms anymore.

I think the front profile looks damn good.
He looks like he has a more defined waist line and back muscles (traps) too.
Suggestions for the front profile:
1. He needs a bulkier neck to support his head.
2. In the ref pic from the cartoon that you posted; the bottom of their chest plates narrow more in the pelvis area.
Suggestions for the side profile:
1. Shape the contour of the chest plates to better emphasize muscle mass.
2. Bigger neck here too.
3. the cavs look a little sharp, just my opinion.
In the ortho view the back of his arm (tricepts) looks a little weird. It could be just the angle of the render.
All of these points are only suggestions.

From my memory, I think the body needs to be a little fatter for Krang. It's hard to tell right now without the rest of the body, but pretty cool models so far.

Texmex: I'll agree, I'll play with the neck, calves, and plates to see what happens. I probably won't get much more definition in the plates though. :/ I think I see what you are talking about for the plates slowly getting smaller at the waist..
SlayerJenkins: I kinda think that too! Maybe when I get more parts created for the body it will help the body take shape! I'm in part like you, thinking krang's body needs more mass.

Here's progress on Krang's body, well his exosuit thingy anyway, I'm sure you can see the changes from the past picture. I did make him larger, and started work on a face (not much detail behind those glasses) I've also tweaked the straps. Like usual, gimme those comments!
I'll have Leo up later, just have to look at the neck on him now :D

no, the model is not textured... this is all polys... My guess is that it could get textured there later, or I could ad in some polys in the area... what do you think would be the better, adding 8 polys (both sides total) or just texture?

I loved the ninja turtles and still do. They had such cool characters back in the 80s and early 90s. How many characters are you hoping to model. Do you remember a character who had a seethrough glass body and inside he had a brain and body parts with mutagen inside. that guy would be cool think of the cool transparencies. maybe I could model him hmmm thinking about it.

Hey kelly, your turtles are cool. I think what they are needing is a bit of bulking up. Yours look like skinny tmnt's.. they are all really pretty muscular.
I cant wait to see Krang himself. lol

twindragon, I've been thinking really heavily about it and I can't recall the character. The only toys I can think of are that bug man, and metalhead (the robot turtle). I'm pretty sure either of these are not that character. WHICH ONE IS IT?!?!??! :D So, please, model that guy! :) I don't know how far Ill go, I am thinking about doing more (since you planted it in my mind...) Maybe the classic shredder? hmmmm *deep in thought*
Grooveholmes, Could you tell me how he's skinny? Is it all over, shell, head? neck? yeah, good ole Krang himself... I'm thinking he'll look weird!

The limbs have kind of a skinny look for a turtle, remember they are kind of squatty. Maybe you could make him look more bulked out by making the limbs thicker and adding more muscle definition?

I wound up adding polygons to add some depth to the character I think about 6 polys on both sides and now he's bulkier and wider... In short, any better? :)

more for experience SlayerJenkins... I'm hoping to tie them into a small little fight scene. Other than that, I dig the turtles, so I thought it would be fun :D I'm thinking about modeling shredder too (wasn't part of the plan).
My goal is to have more examples for character modeling and animation (for games), at the moment my reel is lite.

Well, here's shredder, I kept his size down pretty low on polys, but at the moment he just doesn't seem quite right, maybe it's his clothing waiting to have dynamics or bones added to it, who knows? I don't. :'(

Dude that is just AWESOME! Oh the name of the "fly guy" is Dr. Beakmon. The human fly. hehe. I dont remeber the Robot Turlte's name. I like the models man there good :D cant waitr to see them animated. I want LightWave 8.....

The "fly guy" you speak of is called Baxter Stockman and the robotic turtle is called Mecaturtle. Other well-known villains include Bebop and Rocksteady (pig and rhino), Slash (the evil turtle), and Casey Jones who later became a friend of the turtles. I personally would like to see Bebop and Rocksteady, you are doing a great job, keep it up. The textures will really add a lot to the currently plain models, but you are probably trying to complete the models before texturing.
Shredder looks pretty good, except the feet appear oddly long from the perspective on the lower right of your pic and his cape a bit short.

Good morning guys!
Keiyentai, hahah dr.beakmon :) I just realized where you got this from, or at I'm remembering a show on saturday mornings called, "Beakmon's World." I thought they did a great job with it in how they explained science to kids! Anyway, yer all about baxtor stalkman as the fly? I too am wondering what will happen with LightWave 8, since that's my only full-featured package I have. I heard they purchased david's tool for modeling (as you can tell more interested in modeling).
SlayerJenkins, Those are great ideas for other models. Speaking of texturing, I'm still a little lost at ways to go. I'm leaning towards this being cell shaded to go with the style of the cartoon because I just don't know of a style outside of that that could be decent. Do you have any suggestion of a direction to go?
Bebob, and Rocksteady would be great additions too! I loved Slash and forever quest to find, "binky." Maybe later on. Geeze this is a blast modeling these guys... I did start to work on shredder, as for rigging, but it [the rig] went AWOL. Hopefully I'll have someting today ~ oh, I'll tweak the feet, I agree about that them jobbies! :)
