View Full Version : Snippets from a modern short
Hi all,
I've been lurking around here for awhile now. Figured I should show some stuff I'm working on.
These are some small snippets from a commercial/short (don't know the proper term) that we're working on now. Feel free to comment or criticize. We're under inhuman timepressure here, but any improvement that can be made without to much trouble are always welcome... :D

Tob, where are you located, and what studio (if any) are you working for? Also, where can we see more of this project? Oh, and great work by the way.

Outstanding. How many people are working on this project? what area are you yourself working on? This is some incredible work! Can you post any wireframes?

good work an' all but when your in the snow the tip of your nose tends to turn red/purplish. On the first image the tip of the guys nose is white. This isn't the rule but you may want to have it to a small extent on some characters for that extra touch.:airguitar

Two words, KICK ASS.
Ok some more words, I have been waiting for someone to do a modern short for along time and the fact that its of this quality makes it all the more sweet.
You said this is commercial, who is doing it, and what is it for(game, movie or tv show).
anyway great work :)

Very nice work indeed!!! But I'll second the notion that the little extras like a redish tipped nose would make it even better. Perhaps make a few of the fellas have a bit more blue-ish to their lips. I'm a pale skinned guy myself, and I can't tell you how blue my lips get when I'm out in the cold (let alone the blue/gray color my hands and forearms turn).
These are just little things though, I think you've created some really nice CG here. :applause:

Everything is gorgeous, but the snow looks really CG to me...:shame:
Anyways, who am i to critique that work.....

great work..
The UV stretching on the scarf is something I would take a closer look at. Also the Glove looks like it needs some lovin.

Could you share us some background info regarding the technicalities regarding those images i.e. softwares/hardwares you used and duration of production, etc.
Photorealistic indeed!

WOW!!
Awesome work! What software did you use? The distance blur in the second pic though makes the people look a bit small. I thought cg had its limits in terms of realism but this one totally breaks it. Can't wait to see the flic.
Are those in-game shots of the new Counter-strike game?

Excelent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I especially like the texturing and lighting.
Nothing more to say.
Just one question:
Does it hurt being this good?

Very nice!
But a couple of things I noticed were the uv mapping of the scarf, it seemed a bit "stretched" which gives it a cg look....
Also, it is unlikely that all the people were holding their breath while the "photograph" was taken, so how about some mist from their mouth / noses as they exhale? Not for every character, but even just one or two of them?
nice work though.

The underside of the snow mobiles are too dark. Light would bounce off of the snow and illumnate the underside of the snow mobiles and the soldiers would be illuminated more so as well.
Looks great, nice mountains!!

HotDiggidyDamn.....!!! :argh:
I got back from my evening snack and found a very familiar picture on the front page! :surprised
Thanks for the nice words guys. Makes sitting inside during hot summer days in front of a monitor worth it. I'm really flattered; truly.
I'll try to answer as much as I can, but bear with me; I'm a really slow typist, and under a Gargantuan deadline (in fact, if my boss saw that I was hanging here instead of working he would carve a small Z on my forehead - well, maybe not...). It might not come out as fast as I would like.
I'll try to get some wireframes up as soon as I can. They are not that interesting (basically looks like a black maze so I guess I have to clean it up a little), but I'll put some up if you like.

The "short" (which I believe is most likely the wrong word for this; it's intended for the companys promotion but doesn't quiet fall under the Ad-category) is made for a company making Radar systems. I'm partly under NDA here so I'm not sure yet wether I can reveal their name or not (these are the images that I CAN show - no products are in them). Let me check on that.
Its all made in Maya and composited in Flame*.
Eerrrrh, I work at a postproduction/production company called Edithouse located in Gothenburg, Sweden. In this project I sort of direct as well as do SGI. We're 3 SGI-artists and one Flame*-artist working on this (the mountains and the modeling of the scooter was made by a X-Chun - say Hi to the audience Chris). As far as time goes - Time, not enough!!!! We've been workin on this for 5 weeks or so. Deadline is at the end of next week (did I mention that we're really stressed out?)
The "short" is roughly 4 1/2 min. long.

D*mn!! Part of my answer just got trashed. I just discovered the 1000 character limit the hard way. :annoyed: Sorry if it gets a little cut off here at the end. I'll try to remember what I wrote (grrrrr).
Eeeeh What else.....
Neil: This is indeed from the new CS. You found out our secret client (now we have to kill you...)
E_Moelzer: Only when I laugh. (Hehehe... Ouch!)
I really have to get back to work now. My conscience slaps me constantly and I get the feeling my fellow workers would like me to join them at the grinder. I'll get back as soon as can.
Meanwhile; here are some more shots from the scenes.
Once again: thanks alot for the kind words.  (gee, this smiley-thingie was fun...)
...and another. (...how do you post more than one image at the same time?)

Awesome job, maybe you could add a little more scratches or dents on the armor, not much, just a little. The glove could use more details, tho that's been mentioned before. Besides the gun texture... perhaps the bluring could be a little better. The second picture w/ the snow speeder is rather clear for its implied speed, and a little more lens flair wouldn't hurt. Also, the snow in the first picture could use more bluring, again, too clear.
The third picture, w/ a guy walking, looks rather fake due to pants... well, you know why. Must've been hard to just get the cloth to bend like that, right?
Along with everyone else here - I've simply got to praise the work, very nice stuff indeed! :applause:
Who did you base the character on? Because in the first render you posted (and a couple of others) he reminded me of French actor Jamel Debbouze (who more recently was in Amelie, playing the character Lucien). I think it's just his nose - very distintive upturn (and I've watched Amelie far too much)
Perhaps you could strike a deal with a Virtual Stuntman Co. :D

I love the look and feel, but all the guys look the same.
That's because they're clones. ;)
No, seriously, all due to lack of time, nothing else. Didn't even have time to re-texture at least some of them.
AJ_23: Sadly to say: no. Though I consider Amelie to be one of the best pictures of yesteryear :buttrock: , and have seen it more times than neccesary, so it might have been included subconsiously. I agree, the resemblance is creepy...

I wish we had such nice character work on some of our projects over here at SCIFI 3D.
The only thing I could think of is maybe adding some steamy breathe from them since it's a cold environment.

Wicked Cool. Really great stuff. Great lighting and models. :buttrock:
Definitely want to see the animations once the veil of darkness is lifted further. Really want to see them move as good as they look.
Only other thing I'd say besides the breath/nose/etc. is that in the very first pic, his glove looks unsurfaced. Other than that, primo. Hope you guys live. :)
P.S. Yes! Amelie was one of the best movies ever. And it does look like he's doing a cameo :D

:bounce:
Funny you should mention it, because his hands ARE untextured. Took the easy one out there; thought no one would notice
Been thinking about vapour, but had to shelf it on my long list of "things to do when the rest of the film is done". I also wanted to make his scarf move in the wind (didn't happen either :annoyed: ) Ghaaa I wish I had more time......

Despite your complaints on a timeshortage, the shots look incredibly realistic. My compliments. I especially like the lighting, very real.
As a complete nono on Maya, might I ask what rendering settings you use and how long a screen takes to be rendered? Also did you use any form of radiosity or special skin-shader?
once again, great stuff.
Oh yeah say 'Hi' to Mats from me
No radiosity - takes to long, no skinshader - never got it to work. :annoyed:
The rendering times average around 30 sec/frame for the characters and 30-50 min./frame for the backgrounds. Almost all of the particle effects are hardware rendered and messed around with in post....
Btw I really liked your new map. Looked very cool

30 sec for characters ? Network render? or on single computer?
Network. Though, even if it's assigned to the farm there's only 2 CPUs working on each frame.
Times differ some deppending on how tight the shot is, but in average 30 sec. Almost all of the textures are file textures and there's not to many lights. The geometry's fairly simple as well.
