Being entirely new to UV layouting and texturing, I decided to start off with some easy geometry, and wrapped a toxic waste barrel in a detoriated rusty metal skin.

Modeled in Maya, rendered with mentalray, textures done in PS.

The model will ultimately be used in an animated short currently named 'Curfew'; this is a working title subject to change.

Any feedback is very welcome!

the barrels are great, awesome job texturing

one crit. The texture for the ground seems stretched and unrealistic.

Otherwise good job.

very nice! your bump looks spot on. these should look nice in any industrial scene.

Wow very realistic texture !
How do you do this texture ? It is a photomanipulation ?
I need some rusty textures like this. Can you explain the technique ?
Good job.

tdawg217>> Thanks! You're right about the ground texture, I'll fix that in a future version.

Padawan>> cheers mate! :)

Volcandro:
Generally I work off photo refs, as in this case. For me this seems to work better than create the whole thing from the ground up. It leaves you with less control over things though, which can be a pain if you need more than just a bump map (i.e. specular etc).

Some good tips on how to create worn metal:

And a great texture site I recently came across:

Good luck!
