I was following a tutorial using 2.62 and I noticed that there is a floating black dot similar to a vertex that is next to my model. It is there in object mode and it disappears when I deselected my model. I can't select with the A key or by clicking on it. It always stays on top of the model when I rotate it behind the model. It doesn't moves with my model but disappear if I delete the model. Can anybody tell me what it is and how I get rid of it.

Looks like a mark from the grease pencil. Try going to the tool box (t-key in view port) go down to grease pencil press delete and click the dot, that'll probably get rid of it.
