View Full Version : baked textures are burnt

hello chums

i'm trying to bake some procedural textures - so i select the object and shift select the texture node, go to edit: convert to texture file. Now, im not clear what options to go through so i just leave it at default (except 512x512 file size). I convert, however i now get these seams running all through my new textures -- its almost as if the texture is mirrored on either side of my objects.

(also note that the third object (in back of picture) seems to be showing black along its edges as though the map doesnt completely cover it)

the question is, then, how do i fix these things?

thanks to anyone

You don't say which app you're using, but most texture bakers have an option to add "edge padding" along the uv edges. Use at least a 4-pixel-wide border to get rid of this problem.

i'm using maya 5,

and unfortunately i don't see any options for edge padding -- there IS 'fill texture seams' - but i turned it on and it doesnt do the trick. I turn UV RANGE to 'entire range'. No good. I can't seem to get my head around why either side of my objects "new" textures are mirrored and have seams.

but thanks for the try,

morris

Hmmm. SOme people have talked about using the Minimize or Maximize filter in Photoshop to create edge padding. Might work for you.

You might also ask in the Maya section.

thanks again,

i've actually worked out how to get rid of the seams - by selecting "extend edge color" (pretty obvious, doh) - but the mapping remains to be mirrored across the center of the objects.

murphy's law - post a question and you'll soon find the answer yourself

the seam problem was solved as per above. I got rid of the 'mirroring' (or what was actually tiling) by first uv mapping my objects THEN baking the texture.

i also found that layered shaders had to have all connections (to other shaders) broken before being able to bake.

anyways, for my first step into baking (and texturing in general) i'm glad i was able to figure it. and for any others doing the same i hope this can be of some help.

cheers
