Hi all.
I'm trying to create a scene that is primarily an exterior desert scene. It will have many different camera shots and flythroughs. I have never created an exterior environment like this before in Maya and am looking for any advice.
Firstly, here are some images from Blizzard games showing the style that I would like to achieve.

Now here are my reference images for the actual environment that I'd like to create. I would love to have a shot also where the camera is flying through many mountains and cliffs before arriving and the main scene.

One thing I truly don't understand is how do I know what the correct balance is between 2d and 3d environment and when to use what?
Any other suggestions or ideas on how to best implement this are very much appreciated.
