Have been looking forward to doing this and can't wait to get started.
My Idea is to have the UFO burst into earth's Atmosphere and the turbulence and friction causes it to lose control as it plummets to the ground.
This is just a rough Idea for now, I will see if it works after I've done some storyboards and animatics.

OK, here are some Very Rough storyboards I did. I've decided to keep my animation pretty simple and focus on getting it done with the possibility of expanding and adding a few extra shots if I have some time at the end.
Just want to mention that I have a new member to the team, Gavin Eastwood will be joining me on this challenge so will be changing this to a team entry.
This week has been a bit crazy for me but will have an animatic to follow this pretty soon.

Sorry for the lack of posts but I've been crazy at work and have just moved house, so have had very little free time.
As I mentioned before my friend (Gavin Eastwood) has joined me on this challenge and we've decided to call our team Octonauts.
Here's a few updates we've been working on, it has started off pretty slow but we're picking it up quite a bit now. Hopefully we'll be able to post a lot more frequently.
This is just a quick turn test of the UFO with some basic shaders and glows:
I added some hull damage to the UFO, kept it pretty basic for now, will see how much of it you see during the animation and adjust accordingly:
Here's a quick Explosion Test. I wanted it to explode quickly and die just as fast with little smoke as the UFO will be moving pretty fast. I've tweaked the shape a little, just simming it out but thought I'd post this in the meantime.

Here's my animation:
OK, just wanted to say sorry that I wasn't able to finish this animation. Unfortunately it came at a bad time with work being so busy and I just moved into my new house so my time was very limited. My buddy Gavin managed to help me out by modeling some environments but he too had to stop halfway due to work which didn't help matters.
I managed to put together some effects for the final shot (shot 3). Unfortunately I had to drop shots 1 and 2 from my animation as they weren't finished. But at least I have something to submit, I enjoyed the challenge when I was able to work on it, I was just a little bummed that I couldn't work on this 100%.
A bit about my animation:
Most of it was done in 3ds max, Gavin used zbrush to model the environments and then I used FumeFX, Pflow and krakatoa for the effects.
I rendered out my elements seperately and composited together using After Effects (not the greatest compositing :D )
I then added some grain and flicker and colour tweaks to give it a slightly older look.
I sadly had to drop 2 of my other shots so I lost a lot of work and effects work as the end product just wasn't finished, but in the end I'm just glad to have gotten something out.
Congrats to the others that managed to finish their animations on time, so far I've only seen The Grak's and Wirginia's which are looking Great :)

We have had similar idea what to put in crash shot. What I like is that you put the action closer to the camera, so dust actually reaches camera - this is something I wanted to do too, but it didn't work with my setup. I think your canyon is cool too - I need to team up with environment modeller in next challenge so my environment doesn't look like flat plane ;)

Yeah we have a similar Idea, although yours was much better executed :)
I quite liked your environment, had a really nice mood and the flat surface really worked with your Effects.
I think next time I'll try keep my overall animation a lot simpler so I can focus on getting a complete product out and have more time to work on the effects. I was too scattered on this project and in the end wasted a lot of work unfortunetly.
Congrats though, I really love your work :D

Ok, I started this again on friday Night, so it really didn't give me a lot of time to make a great animation.
I changed the animation a little and then recreated all my effects, so they are not of the greatest sim quality, but I was able to add a lot more into it. Again there are a few comp issues and render artifacts and again I wasn't able to get all my assets simmed and rendered in time, but enough to at least submit something.
Its not bad for a weekends worth of work, wish I had dedicated this sort of time for the whole challenge.
Congrats to all those that finished on time and submitted :)
