Hello!

I have in mind sequence filmed hand held, by someone who was around and had amateur camera. I would like this to look like they attempt to land and they crash. I see if I can make the UFO to come towards camera, scrape the ground and lift chunks of soil, with lot's of smoke and dust. Hope it's going to be fun.

Hello,

I have here basic UFO animation - done by Kelly Phillips, and I made cracking ground and first pass particles. Plan is to add a lot of smoke and dust and motion blur. Not sure if this is going to be final camera angle, but I will add camera shake, and maybe zoom in/out at the start.

Hello,

I have been working on environment a bit. I decided to put all crash on the road and at night. I'm not sure if this is going to be final lighting - I might go much darker than that once I have UFO lights to lit environment more.

I'm working on the ending of shot and compositing it all together. Here are few frames:

Here it is:

For past 2 weeks I have spent on this at least every second day after work, and few longer night at weekends. Although the shot seems to be simple, all work was very valuable learning experience. I would improve and change quite few things if I have more time. But I'm happy to hear feedback from others.

I know I didn't post much interesting WIP stuff, but I really wanted to put all my free time to get it done before deadline.

So here is just few words how it was made:

1. Road was shattered manually, shards rigged using rivet script (thanks to Kelly for finding it).
2. Road animation was baked and brought to Max.
3. UFO was animated by Kelly Phillips in Max.
4. Grass, and little rocks are particles made using PF.
5. All other impact debris were made using PF.
6. Fluid - FumeFX.
7. At start I was rendering each element separately: first impact fluid, first impact debris, second impact fluid and so on, so I could iterate on each of them quicker. Rendering times were no longer than 15 minutes.
8. Rendered elements were composited using AE - mainly Z-depth based compositing - that gave some artefacts, but it was ok for preview.
9. Once I was happy with all elements I have rendered just couple of passes: environment - background, UFO, particles and fluid together.
10 Composited all together in AE thanks to matte-shadow material.
11 Camera shake added in AE - final tweaking by Kelly.

I think this video is great. I really like the background and the feel of the shot. Very dark and moody. Great job! :)

This is very well done Wirginia . I really like the way the pavement is peeling up.

I'm happy that you noticed it. I did it as first idea, but then I covered it with dust and thought no one would see it any more.

That's awesome! I feel like :bounce: Thanks Kelly for invaluable help with animation. And again, thanks everyone who worked hard to create these beautiful pieces of FX magic. And thank you all, who read, watched and voted. Last but not least thank you Roberto for organising the Challenge. Without you all it would not happen at all.
