View Full Version : quicktime VR crashes lightwave?
Mr. Cadillac 11-17-2003, 06:24 PM I have a project I'm working that needs to be rendered in QT VR format... it'll render fine on my boss' laptop, but not on my workstation- it finishes frame one then crashes. I can render it all out in still images, but no matter what I try it blows up real good when VR is checked. Does anyone have any experience on this?
thanks!

That's odd...I've done some QTVR stuff in the past, and it's always worked fine for me. I'm running 7.5c on OSX 10.2.6...QT version is 6.4. Shouldn't make a difference though, PC or Mac. Maybe you need to update your version of QT or something's not installed properly? Maybe try re-adding the LW quicktime plugin (think it's called QTtools.p or something like that). I know Kretin's done some QTVR work with his frogs...maybe he can help?

I do them all the time on every kind of computer out there...G3, G4, G5, Pent 2, 3, 4 and no problems.
Try re-adding in your plugins. That is go to layout -> edit plugs and scan folder. choose the plugin folder. See if that helps.

yeah make sure your on the lastest Qtime
also i sometimes get Qtime VR to crash LW when i have the wrong setting in the Qtime VR options,
when this happens I load up the Qtime VR scene from the Newtek tutorial and that works so i rework my job and it works
anyway test with the QtimeVR scene on the Newtek tutorial
and see how that works

Post the settings you are using in your quicktim VR.
and what kind of VR you want to get.
That would help alot.

however the best choice for professional production, is even if you can use QTVR or other output codecs in Lw, alsways render your animation as a still images sequence, and do the final output of your animation with the real codecs, or in Premiere.

you can only create Qtime VR's in LW or otehr 3D apps
Premiere, Aftereffect etc can't make or even open Qtime VR files unless you have Qtime VR studio on the Mac or VRworks on PC you can't edit them in any way can't even add hyper links on hot spots =(
even the fact that lightwave can create the hotpots you can't add the target to the hotspot
this is the most dumbest thing Apple done to the Qtime format
it's usefull in so many ways and i really like it alot but unless you shell out $$$$ you can't do nothing with it :(
settings ?? there are afew of them,
again download the Newtek tutorial scene and see if it renders without crashing i always uses this scene as a base to start from

True, but you can still render out to a TGA sequence, for example, and then load the sequence as a backdrop and render the QTVR from that. Saves a lot of potential headaches. :)

yeah i done this for one client, rendered out a QtimeVR & tga sequence at the same time
but in the end, I was only using the QtimeVR created the first time and the client was doing print screen to get any stills they needed, qiucker then searching the image dir
so it was 2 cd's of TGA's that were never used
and if you do a VR render from Stills you still have to get the QtimeVR settings correct anyway,
Eg- the same as what you created them with, so you would have already make a working QTVR file
but you might save "some" render time when doing another render :surprised

yeah, it happens when your quicktime codecs are not correct. I had the same problem rendering a scene in Sorensen3 video format. Reinstall the codecs and it will be ok :)

sorry for taking so long to get back to this- I just tried rendering out the images and setting them to a background image sequence and making a QT of that- It works without a hitch, using the identical setting to the file that crashes... I'm assuming it's something weird about the scene itself... I have four of these VRs to do and I've used the same setting on all, two render fine on this machine and two crash lightwave on the first frame.
Grr.
setting are-
object settings:
columns 20 start/end 0/360
rows 1 start/end 0/0
animation and compression settings are default.
I'm not too worried about it now, with the sneaky trick Triple G illuminated above... thanks Triple G and thanks to everyone who replied!
