I might try using an earlier version of the detonator drivers. But this problem is really beyond me so I can't say for sure. Sorry I can't be more help.

Have you just selected the nVidia driver from XF86Configurator? This is a 2D only driver, for OpenGL support you need to go to nvidia.com and download the Linux Detonator drivers.
Download the kernel driver for RedHat 7.2 and your processor configuration and get the generic GLX RPM.
Download the release notes and follow the instructions to the letter, otherwise the installed drivers will not work
Signal 6 is, according to man 7 signal, SIGABRT Action=C (terminate process and dump core) Abort signal from abort(3)
You've had an abnormal program termination.
The quickest way to resolve this is to check the results of these commands... if /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 doesn't exist then refer to /etx/X11/XF86Config
grep nv /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
grep GLcore /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
grep dri /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
grep glx /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
The results should (in order) be
Driver "nvidia"
# Load "GLcore"
# Load "dri"
Load "glx"
although the spacing is going to be much wider between words.
If the results are instead
Driver "nv"
Load "GLcore"
Load "dri"
with no response for the last command then you haven't got the Detonator drivers installed.
Any questions?
BTW, if you're using an Athlon chip you may encounter other problems that need to be worked around by loading specific support.

If you have a wheelmouse it ain't working porperly and you're in too low a colour depth for serious rendering work :p
Why does your videocard have a Bus ID? Is it PCI or summat?
OK, well I had a look at the A|W site and it's possible you may have to update your glibc... updating your kernel wouldn't be a bad idea either. Essentially, if you're using the default install of Redhat 7.2 with no updates your system has problems running Maya.
More information under Maya 4.0.1 Qualification (http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Community/Support/qualified_hardware/QUAL/maya_40_linux.html#os)
Otherwise, you didn't say latest detonator, you said latest nVidia and since you said on XFree 4.0 (instead of XFree86 4.1.0) I assumed you to have 'clueless newbie' status :p
hope this helps, Paulhttp://homepage.ntlworld.com/odubtaig/smilies/coffee.gif
Of course, if I'd been remotely awake the first time I replied I'd have immediately twigged it's not a hardware issue :argh:
