Discreet Announces New Versions of inferno, flame and flint

inferno 5.5, flame 8.5 and flint 8.5 offer a host of new features including the next-generation Discreet Master Keyer

Montréal, Canada—November 17, 2003—Discreet, a division of Autodesk, Inc. today announced new versions of its compositing and visual effects systems, inferno® 5.5, flame® 8.5 and flint®8.5. These new versions will debut at the International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition (Inter BEE) in Chiba City, Japan on November 19, 2003. Discreet’s Academy Award®–winning visual effects systems* have played a pivotal leadership role in digital film production for nearly a decade and are now helping drive new HDTV and 2K digital intermediate workflows around the world.

“These new versions of inferno, flame and flint are a clear demonstration of our ongoing commitment to providing the world’s leading digital artists with the most innovative technology in visual effects,” said Martin Vann, Discreet’s vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. “The rich functionality of the new inferno, flame and flint systems help artists accomplish more in less time, with an even stronger end result.”

Key New Features
inferno 5.5, flame 8.5 offer a range of new creative features including powerful new visual effects capabilities from Discreet’s advanced image-processing research group—Discreet’s next generation Master Keyer; 10-bit media support, Colour Warper™ enhancements; the addition of Discreet’s advanced GMask gradient technology to the Discreet Keyer; new Logic Ops options (transparency, blend, divide); additional capabilities in the Burn-In tool; expanded EDL Editor tools including EDL conversion; multi-tape archiving; and the addition of support for 720P tape decks to their HDTV archiving capabilities. flint 8.5 features all of the above enhancements—including the Colour Warper—with the exception of improved HDTV archiving capabilities.

Discreet’s Master Keyer is based on powerful new algorithms that enable artists to interact more directly with the image, yet provide the intelligence to guide the keying process with greater sophistication and precision. The Master Keyer features sophisticated three dimensional color isolation technology designed to facilitate the keying of poorly set up effects shoots, including such challenges as badly lit green/bluescreens, HDCAM compression or film grain, spill, transparent objects, shadows and fine edge detail."
