well, i bought all my stuff ta put together a new computer.. and it isn't working! it's a P4 1.6a, Gigabyte GA-81RXP motherboard, 256x2 DDR crucial ram, gainward gf3 128... and, when i boot up i get aboslutely nothing.. nada... zip.. have an rma in to newegg right now for the mobo - i'm sure it's not the vid card... a computer consultant who is a famliy friend thought it might be the mobo for some reason, so that's the path i'm taking.. any thoughts? at this point, i guess i'm just waiting for rma clearace, then i'll shi[ it off. i guess.. *sigh*

anything u have ta say would be appreciated... ok, well, almost anything :)

thanks!

How are you "sure" its not the video card? One time when I was putting a PC together I hadn't seated the vid card in the slot all the way and the system would boot, but nothing would come up on the moitor. It stayed blank without a thing.

Don't get me wrong, it most likely is a bad mobo (pro'lly a BIOS flashing error) but did you check the video card? Or did you just take the friend's word for it?

yeha, i know what you mean.. unfortunately in this case, i tested it.. meh.. oh well.. i'm hoping it's the mobo - i guess other then that, it's the cpu.. what would i expect if the ram didn't work? is it possible that the ram is causing something like this to happen? there are two chunks in there, and i tried both of them, in diff slots, diff orders, by themselves etc., but could it be possible that they are both dead? would i get the a BIOS screen? thanks again!

I actually tried booting a PC without any RAM in the mobo once and it will boot. You get up to the POST and when it goes to check the RAM it comes up with some sort of error and reboots. I guess it could be your CPU but I strongly doubt it. Most likely it's either your mobo or vid card. Let me ask you this: Was your harddrive active and making noise with the HD LED on the case blinking when you tried booting? Or was nothing at all happening with the harddrive as well as on screen.

Your random beep speaker's hooked up right? If the videocard's gone you should get some beeps.

Try unplugging everything but the videocard and front speaker, you'd be surprised what weird feedback shit can completely kill a computer dead(1) Leave power connectors hooked up to all devices such as CD-ROM/hard drive/etc.

If there's any change in noise/behaviour/sound levels/deranged monkeys gatecrashing/anything at all then let us know.

(1)Once had a mouse that caused severe I/O errors and all my 'puter did was beep at me... until I unplugged the mouse :curious:

heh, well, well, well..

got the new mobo.. didn't work.. damn i say to myself. then, for some unknown reason, as i'm packing it back up, i decide to try it again, OUTSIDE the case.. hmm.. i think - perhaps it is shorting w/ the case.. so i try it and what do ya know - it works! so i throw it back in the case, and put a liner between it and the case and it works just fine! sighh.. so the old mobo prob worked also.. in anycase.. this one is cool too.. MSI 845 Ultra.. nifty.. thanks for all your help!

LOL yeah I guess we all tend to overlook the easy stuff from time to time. :p

I'm glad you got your problem fixed.

Maybe you forgot to put in the riser screws before installing the motherboard?
