View Full Version : Character: Scott
Hi everyone!
I just started modeling a character for my 3D short.
His name is Scott Atkins. He is 32 years old and works at a
advertisement agency.
I'll post my sketches later.
C&C are always welcome!

Here are some concept sketches. In my 3D model he appears still very young. I'll work on that.

Hi,
I really like what you have so far. Especially how you translated the haircut from 2d to 3d. My only critique would be that the edgeloops underneath his eyes look like he didn't sleep for a couple of days. But really that's just nitpicking.
I wouldn't worry too much about him looking too young. That will change as soon as he gets his glasses and a pair of eyebrows. =)

Love the way you did his hair..
He look a little too "alien" without a nose though...

I like the stylization, but the nose thing looks truely odd in 3D. Glasses may help, I'll wait and see. :)

I think the eyebrows and glasses will help with the character. And im always down for seeing someone try a new style so im looking forward to seeing this nasaly challenged dude animated.

the lack of nose is just hi-larious to me....
but it makes him look more like an alien than a stylized human, cause there is a slight bump, just no nose. Anywho, looks good so far.
Cheers,

good job with the modeling! and expecially the name lol it looks so much like a scott hehe.:applause:
Hi! Thnx for your feedback.
About the nose...I think it gives him a lot personality without it. But maybe I'll change it. Fist I want to complete his face (eyebrows, glasses and stuff....).
I'm working on another project right now, so I won't be able to post new stuff for a while. But I think I can go on modeling at the end of the next week.

it should be a business-man, am I right? but right now it looks a bit like a child... but when you made some accessories (clothes, glasses and so on), we can see again...
troja
Hi!
Made some new stuff today.
I've edited the ear and the mouth area. Added eyebrows
and the glasses. I still think that he looks nice without
a nose. What do you think?

Love the style of this character very much, the only thing that doesn't seem very realistic is that his glasses are staying on without a nose...........you might want to work somthing into the design of that.

interesting character. I'm curious how the no-nose thing fits in. really nice work. *thumbs up*

I think it's cool your character has no nose, I like the look and it totally is not necessary and supports the style.
Please remove this stupid checkerpig reflection map. Next time use a nice picture.
Keep on going, it will be such a cool short.

I think he looks like a really stylized alien more than a human. Only because there really isn't a nose and the eyes are an odd shape. I like the design, it just reads more alien than human to me. I think a little more definition in the nose area would help a lot. He doesn't need nostrils, just a little more of a bump in my opinion.
Looking very good though!

Lot of style with this one. Perfect match from concept. Are you going to texture map the hair or leave it flat like it is.
Hi guys thnx for your comments.
dmonk:
I'm planning to texture the whole character. The hair will
be textured too.
Heaven871:
checker reflection removed :)
Here a little update:

Yeah I have to agree about the nose. It just looks too much like you forgot to put it on him, especially with the glasses. I would reconsider putting one on him, or at least make the area just out more to give the illusion, like an anime thing or something.

No.
I really like this, it's different. If you didn't want him to have a nose, don't put a nose on it. A nose would make it a completely different character from your concept.
No.

You got the point dmonk.... I can't just give him a nose without
changing the character. I wrote a character sheet, I gave him
a name and I designed him without a nose. If I give him a
nose he will be a complete different character. At least it
is a toony character so I think the missing nose gives him
a uniqueness (as I said before). I doesn't have to be realistic I think.
But thnx for your comments guys. I really apreciate it!

OK OK,
I do see your point. Just a personal thing. But I do definately believe in sticking to your concept goal and to stylization. Just bugs me a little thats all, to each his own, and it is still a great model.
Drakaran
12-07-2003, 05:00 AM
exactly, Gorro. that's why I said I was interested how you were fitting the no-nose in with my post, cause the first thing that came to mind is the saying "he can't see beyond the end of his nose" if he has no nose.... anyway, there could be a number of ways that having no nose fits into the character. as I stated before, this is really nice work. I feel like there was a lot of thought put into this character.
Krypton
12-07-2003, 05:28 AM
I don't know. It's hard to make an anime type nose. Because even in your model sheet you gave him a little pointy nose.
http://www.jasonrost.com/CGTalk/scott.jpg
I think a little nose like this would help. Unless that was unintended in that drawing.
Gremlin
12-07-2003, 05:47 AM
Krypton, i think your mis-interpretting that drawing...
the shape of the glasses gives the illusion of a nose, and the shading is that way to accent that there is a bump there, but in conjunction with the shape of the glasses I could see how you'd think it was a nose.
or maybe im just wrong?
Krypton:
Interesting! I never saw my sketch this way before:)
Gremlin is right. Ther is no nose. But I can see what you mean.
thnx for your crits guys

Hey there, Goro,
I like your character, it's very japanese/anime. Guess you used Maya, right? Does every GFS student use Maya for 3d?
It's coming along quite nicely - keep at it!
he has no noseeeeee...
oh my..
his glasses will falling down..
:]
good work;;;;
A little update. I started modeling his pants. They are still
very lowpoly.
Don't look at the shoes:) They are only dummies so I can see the
proportions. The hands need a lot more detail too.
Thomas Mahler:
I'm using XSI this time. My first 3D short "Kong and Bird" (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=80230)
was done with maya. I think 60% of the German Film School
students are using Maya 40% XSI 6% 3DSMAX and 4% Lightwave.
I just wanted to learn more about XSI.

Interesting, I didn't know you were able to put the usage into percentages... ! :D
Pretty sad about the 6% 3dsmax and 4% Lightwave.
And.. I like how the pants turned out, the folds are nice in the front. Also, the belt adds a nice touch... though... don't get lost in details, I know you always work so hard... don't have to be perfect! :)

What about a toon render?
nice work so far - he looks very young not 32 give him some little creases on the forehead or a chin dimple or flatten the face on some areas very round faces makes faces younger
he looks like a soulcage department char - so go on with this work
NickTheNut:
np
capblood:
I already decided to texture this guy. Toon shading will not
provide the environment the story takes place. (parking lot)
But thnx for the suggestion.
swag:
I can see your point. But when I give him creases on forehead or a chin dimple it will change the character too much. But I will
try the flatten thing. Thnx for your crits
Today I modeled his shoes and his socks.

the shoes look ok. the bottom/cuff of the pants look pretty odd, and the knee is positioned too low, but the overall looks pretty good.
Thnx Drakaran I'll check out the knees.
Today I started modeling the hands.

Great work! I really like the style of this character! Not too cartoony and not too realistic. Just right =).
But I have to say that although I like his new haircolour it makes the whole character look a tad too achromatic. But don't change this now... I'm pretty sure that this will change once you put him in the final setting.
The bottom of his pants look a bit fluffy .. too round. Maybe you want to change that.
And I would love to see a render from his palms. If you have the time
Hi stephan! Thnx for your crits. Don't worry the hair color is not final. The hair wil be textured actually...
I'll see what I can do with the bottom of the pants.
I'm still working on the hands. There will be new renderings
soon. Maybe tomorrow.
ok the hands are pretty finished I guess. Need your feedback.

Sorry I didn't read the whole thread so maybe somebody mentioned it. But did you try adding maybe just a little nose without nosetrills. Kinda like Japanimation noses?
Happy new year everyone!
I couldn't update for a while cause I stayed by my parents x'mas and
new year. (they have no internet). Well now I'm back.
Here are the latest renderings. The texturing and shading are
almost finished.

Nice character indeed! I especially like the hair as well.
Looks a little like Harry Potter with the glasses on!
The scetches are a bit different, I mean in the upper one the one on the left side looks older than it does in the right one.
Witch one did you use to model it?
The age could match the concept better if you would add an adams apple to the throat, like you have in the concept.
Maby it would help if you would squash the head right about the temples a bit and make the forehead a tad more flat. And maby broaden the shoulders?
Try making the neck a little thicker and the jaw a tad stronger if that gives him a little more age, now he looks about twelve year old to me.
The shirt looks really good, but maby you might work with the skin texture a bit more, maby add a little stubble and a touch of dark under the eyes, he works hard, right? Or will it change him too much?
The texture in the belt is on the spot, but I'd work with the shoes and the hair a bit more (a couple of grays maby?).
Nice clean modelling overall.
Keep up the good work!
Flip_Render:
Thnx for your detailed feedback.
I used the second picture to model it (the front and the side view)
I know somehow in the sketch he looks a bit older.
I already modeled a adams apple. I made it stronger now.
I changed is face a bit. But he looks still young.
The texture thing with the dark areas under the eyes was
a great idea. I edited the texture. It is only a very small difference
but it looks better now:)
I'll work on the shoes.
But the shoes are the last thing that I will change on the character. No time left.
I have to finish modeling the set and start modeling the blendshapes.
So thnx a lot
I will update again when I have some blendshapes.
Spend the last two days modeling and texturing the set.
Here is a little preview.

nice work goro, the texturing looks pretty cool. only the lighting could use some more work. I'm not sure what exactly bothers me. did you think about adding some different light colors ? might add some more depth and mood to the pictures
Thnx!
The lighting is quick and dirty. I used only some pointlights to
light up the scene. So the final set will have a lot more contrast and dark areas. And of course some colored lights too.

the character remind me of some roles in the cartoons.
the pose of the no nose man should be change,if u wanna make a still master piece.
i think the man can not smell(u may add some thing to take place the nose,if not the glasses will fall.)
expecting your finished work.xD
Thnx for your crit wang4wang. A lot of people on cgtalk
said that he must have a nose. But I planed to create a
character without a nose from the beginning on. I often
draw characters without noses. And now I wanted to try it
out in 3D. I think it gives him a unique look.
If I would model a nose it wouldn't match with my concept and
it would not be the character I wanted to create.
I've heared diffrent opinions on that nose thing. Some like it and some like it not.
I'm working on the blendshapes right now. Let's see how
he looks like with facial expressions.
Here is another rendering of the set.
I added color to the lights and a car.
The car is taken from a model libary. Unfortunately I don't have
time to model a car by myself....
Hope you like it!
http://www.area-56.de/pics/cgtalk/scott_set_wip_08.jpg
I love how it's turning out! The look of the garage (?) is quite nice, quite beautiful texture and the car also fits in perfectly.
I can't wait to see him animated!
And I'm glad you didn't change your character (nose), because I think it's a good idea to take up new challenges/ideas and see how they work out in 3D.... and I think his face doesn't lack anything, it's how he looks and makes him somewhat adorable, too. ^_^
thnx yade! Here are some final renderings of the character.
I spent the whole last month animating scott. I'm almost finished
I'm animating the last scene right now. Think the short will be

Nicely rigged! The detail in the hands is excellent. Cool realistic posing going on there. In the last pic there (looking at his glasses) he seems to be crosseyed?
As for the nose thing, he reminds me a of Abe from the Oddworld games. Personally I like him. The facial expressions look good and I am sure that if your story is good no-one will really care about the nose after a bit. They'll care more about the character.
Great work.
hi jkyoutsey!
Thnx for your comments.
It's actually not a big story...I tried to focus on animation
this time. But that doesn't mean there is no story:)
Well just see for yourself.
the short will be finished at the end of the week. I'll post it in
finished work then.
