View Full Version : Sports Comic Series
Magnum_E 11-16-2003, 03:57 AM Well, me and a friend have started a new online comic series called "Halftime." It features two crazy sports analysts named Max and Nick, and occasionally some guests. It is all about basketball, and we publish a new one each week. As we get a site up, and more and more viewers, we will start to publish them bi-weekly and hopefully work them out into a daily think eventually. We have currently finished 3 comics. You really have to understand basketball to understand these comics, but please give us some praises and crits. We really want this to be popular and good, and maybe make it into some big-name sports magazines, so any constructive replies are MUCH appreciated.
Enjoy!

the style is pretty similar to penny arcade, except less polished.
theres nothing about these characters that draws me in. i dont feel attached to them, nor do i feel a personality from them. the eyes are dead and the facial expressions don't tell me anything.

with a bit of practice you can work out the style and make it a bit more your own, but currently the style and color scheme is the penny arcade template. couple of ideas : stay away from just plain boxes! go get some comic books and see how the panels blend and overlap each other instantly changing your layout style. change the color scheme from simple ink fill ins to more gradients with detail or even rip off an old classic and go for like a Peanuts-esque kinda style. but my only real complaint is way to much text! cut that down. quick wit is the art of comic strips, i would suggest you pick up any of kyle baker's books, he says a lot in a few or even a single panel. don't get down though dude, good luck!

Thanks for all the comments and crits so far.
We are polishing the art and style. And obviously, shortening the text.
We are still in the beginning stages and we are still experimenting to find what fits best.
We are starting by adding drop shadows and slightly more shadins into the drawings, but still keeping in the Penny Arcade-ish style of coloring.
Facial expressions and the eyes are also being experimented with. We are hoping facial expressions will come along with more and more practice and experiments.
We are also trying new body and head shapes.
As far as layout goes, we like what happened with Comic 3's layout, but we will try larger panels, since we have figured out a great way to shorten the text.
Basically, we are throwing out the first two comics and starting over. You will see something totally new and different from here on out. We have high hopes, and hopefully we will have a site up sometime in the near future and start getting our comic out to the public.
Thanks for the comments, we can't express how much we appreciate them.
