View Full Version : Widescreen
tsmalldon 01-20-2002, 12:50 AM Hi Guys ,
Im just wondering about Widescreen format in Maya
Now ive tried setting res to 720 X360
but it always squashes the picture, and changes the pixel aspect ratio
anyone shed some light on this
this may be a stupid question but i cant get it not to sqaush the pic
Thanks

under render gobals somewhere you need to turn "ignore film gate" off. I think its under render options or something.
then under the camera attributes set the ratio for whatever widescreen you want. 2.35 is the usual cinema ratio.
then set the resolution in render globals to whatever you want.... like if you are doing a pal video then use 720x576 (?)
That'll give you the letterbox look... with black bars at the top and bottom of the picture. Although it just occurred to me that you might not want this look.... hmm....
well, just fiddle around with the camera's film gate, and the render resolution.

I Did everything you said and it shows the film gate as being widescreen yet it still renders out fullscreen
unles i change the render res to 720 x360
then its widescreen but by doing that it changes the device aspect ration and the pixel aspect ratio creating a sqaush
Any ideas?
THanks

ok. try again :)
I'll explain more clearly
goto camera attributes. change film aspect ratio to 2.35
go to render globals > render options > uncheck "ignore film gate"
Then set the render resolution to 640x480 or 1024x768.
Try that. It works for me.

Thanks I got it ,
I was considering setting res to 720x486 then just positioning and parenting planes to the camera to give the appearance of widescreen .
but i got the actual widescreen now
Thanks a lot, saved me some time and trouble

I also need widescreen and Kruger advice helped me  ,
my problem is that for some reason i see the black bars(widescreen) only when I render a single image,
But when I try to batch render the scene Maya renders all the frame resolution 720*576 without the film gate and black bars.
any advice?
Thanks
10min later-...
I found my mistake for some reason it jumped to another camera I had in the scene, so I deleted all the other cameras.:wip:

if i remember correctly, you can hop into the attributes editor for a camera and turn off Renderable... i think
