View Full Version : max's sithLord
01-25-2012, 04:47 PM
wish u all happy sculpting. :buttrock:
i'm going to make some kind of a female sith lord.
will post some images later on.
01-25-2012, 07:55 PM
as said here are two images.
i'm new to mudbox (not to zbrush), kinda like it. different feel, some features missing, but nice waxbrush.
i did the concept yesterday, after i found some refpics.
just played around.
took the mudbox base head and defined the shape of her head. next step will be retopo and testing around with the surface of her skin.
01-26-2012, 08:20 AM
congrats for the solid start! good luck to your entry
01-27-2012, 06:56 AM
finding the overall shape and proportions. thinking about her story. kind of an alone hybrid between sith and jedi ... more on that after weekend :)
played around with her skin tone and markings. like the idea of an albino.
need to change the shape of the shoulder pauldrons. those are connected with the typical jedi coat.
one one leg the lightsaber (white light) on the other a bag? don't know jet.
tell me what you think.
i really like the shape of ther face... very natural...
cant wait to see the final textures...
01-29-2012, 02:45 PM
nice to hear. will take some time to texture her :).
did the retopo of her face and build the teeth (need some tweaking).
really clean topo... think i have to cleanup mine after the final sculpting... ;)
01-30-2012, 06:25 PM
yea, thanks to all wireframe references i have.
refined the body. added hips. made her more female. like the skinny look of her.
the legs are a little bit short, need to change that ... but i think ill stick to the overall proportions
later on she will wear boots and gloves, so no need for toes and refined fingers.
01-30-2012, 08:56 PM
started doing her cloth. Couldn't resist doing a rendering.
01-30-2012, 10:52 PM
wow! I am loving your latest render the cloth looks natural. Are you using mudbox to sculpt it?
I am also digging the overall look of your character under that hood... very sinister. It seems your entry is taking shape pretty quickly. :wip:
01-31-2012, 04:46 AM
hej gyarados, thanks very much.
yea, sculpted the hood in mudbox after blocking it out in maya with some vertices.
the sinister looks comes from dark mood of the picture, i think :D
01-31-2012, 08:00 AM
Looks great, keep it up. You are on the right path to the podium :applause:
01-31-2012, 08:51 PM
a long way to go, fantasymaster :)
began to block out her elements, don't know what to do with her shoulderpads. tomorrow some goggles and ... don't know yet .
02-01-2012, 07:51 AM
Great progress so far.
The Cloth has a nice weight and feel to it.
02-01-2012, 11:17 AM
added some props, refined some other in size and position. refined color. won't stay grey. :)
scribbled some ideas. goggles still missing.
02-01-2012, 02:20 PM
Very nice starting, it's always motivating seeing people like you rushing through it.
Will you erase the hood??
Good luck with the challenge
02-01-2012, 03:50 PM
Guilome, thanks. No, i will not erase the hood, cause than i have to make some kind of hair :D.
02-01-2012, 08:35 PM
worked on the framing of the final image. had the idea of a comic strip type image.
lets look, if i'm capable of doing such an image. :curious:
have to find some sort of "story" to tell. to make it believable.
the little pieces of her life coming slowly together in my mind. very slowly, because my knowledge of the star wars universe is a bit small.
02-02-2012, 02:55 AM
hi i really like your work! I was wondering if u could help me with how u make cloth? is there some sort of tutorial or guide or just tell me what u use to make it with?
02-02-2012, 05:03 AM
jj1567: glad u like it :).
regarding the cloth. u need a lot of references. than make a basemesh around the characters body. stupid simple topology with quads. export it to mudbox, take the sculpt brush and make the wrinkles.
there is also the possibility of first simulating it in maya and then sculpting over it.
it is all about the wrinkles and folds :D
there are some tutorials, you have to search for wrinkles and zbrush (because there are a lot of more people using it)
selwy wrinkles tut (http://www.selwy.com/2009/zbrush-clothes-tutorial/)
gnomon workshop tut (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/products/tutorials/rsm02/)
i hope, i could help you.
02-02-2012, 02:12 PM
The concept looks quite dangerous and mysterious character, like Michone at the comic the Walking dead but imho you are loosing that in the modelling. The first time that I saw the model face looks like a man face. :/ I love the feel jamaican black girl tattooed voodoo on the concept. :)
02-02-2012, 04:20 PM
ballo, first i didn't know what you mean with the black jamaican girl :D. this was an incident, because i blocked out the silhouette and added not enough detail in the face.
regarding the face: i know what you mean. the proportions are a little bit off. i didn't want to make a perfect female face ... hm maybe i should tweak the proportions a little bit more.
i'm also planing to add creepy detail on her face. so lets wait, when i'm adding detail to her face.
i have no idea, if i'll be capable of making cool dreads, lets look :)
02-02-2012, 04:28 PM
I meant that your concept looks like a black badass girl, as Michonne, look, maybe it's interesting study that. :) of course you will do whatever you want.
02-02-2012, 06:51 PM
Even though I have a thing for dreads I consider them more a bit anti-establishment and therefore not the first choice for imperial affiliates.
What do you guys think?
02-02-2012, 07:25 PM
sunskull, but she isn't any more an imperial soldier. left alone on a sand planet. fighting for her life, or what so ever. no water, no shampoo. :D
ballo, a black badass girl is ****ing dangerous and with white paintings even more.
mine isn't that dangerous :) . the idea isn't bad. but i'll stick to the albino style girl. most important reason is, that the image will be little bit dark and i think i'll lose a lot of detail in her face. hej, but thanks again. appreciate every crit and will try to test every one out :D.
i want to learn something.
did some concepts before and after work today on her vehicle. based on a speederbike.
my favorite are those with a plus.
02-03-2012, 09:18 AM
I'd go for a more stylized bike, a bit longer than yours, with a more dynamic driver's position. Just a thought!! nice entry so far man.
02-03-2012, 03:11 PM
hej lapsusmental, that's a good point, with the more dynamic drivers position.
i thought, that she's like a nomad, being on the bike for long periods of time. for this, she needs a comfortable sitting position.
but i'll try out the longer bike, i think that's an good idea. thanks man
02-05-2012, 09:44 PM
Whoa... this entry's so fast that I'm seeing dust hehe. Looks good so far, the face paint is very creepy, in a good way. Keep it up!
02-07-2012, 12:34 PM
Hey great work.Just love it.
02-07-2012, 06:17 PM
SONIC-X: thanks a lot!
lbelerique: thanks too, hope you didn't get dust in the eyes ;). maybe i'll adopt the paint for a white skin.
progress: rebuilt the boots, sculpted the first pass of the folds, added simple shader.
the colors are more then not final :D. the directions is ok...
02-07-2012, 07:49 PM
great update max.
i like the boots a lot. they give her a loner, outlaw feel, which i think is great.
keep up the good work
02-07-2012, 08:13 PM
like the boots, nice and clean.
i would prefer some high heels boots, but that's a matter of taste ;)
keep it up!
nice boots... maybe some more buckles..?
02-08-2012, 09:41 PM
guys/girls: glad u like the boots, no oglu, no more buckles :D
today i tested the skin shader, and how i've to do texture in mudbox to get a nice result.
the shader is still too waxy but getting slowly there.
a making of gif of the rendershots ...
02-09-2012, 07:13 AM
Oh my god, she looks scary! I can feel the dark side in her
02-10-2012, 07:23 PM
Thinks I would work on :
*More aggressiveness in the nose, pudgy noses can kill a good villain.
*Colder skin tone, it will wreak of death.
*I feel good markings on the body always follow the anatomy and structure they are placed on. The face has very defined planes and if the marking could flow with them I feel it would be a lot more powerful.
* tats normally look better when you ad hues of the type of skin they are placed on. Its good to look and a lot of reference. The light also interacts with the ink in a differently then it will with the skin.
As I said, it looking great. Keep it up!
02-12-2012, 03:58 PM
DanielCortes: Thank you very much for this feedback! i'll change her nose and make it more aggressive, know what you mean. About the skin tone, yes i'm already trying to achieve a colder and brighter one.
The markings where only quick overpaints, but i'll will remember your words when i be painting them. Thank you for your advice.
Progress: Tried to get the eyes rendered somehow correct (have some problems with the refraction). The color of the iris isn't final. The textures where painted in mudbox and refined in ps. Used references only for color picking.
Need to work more on her eyearea ...
02-12-2012, 05:02 PM
Oh man you are fast. working on shaders etc..
maybe the bulge of the cornea could be stronger. this could help to give it a bit more shape in reflections and specs.
02-13-2012, 07:59 PM
cool max! a would like to see more body detail stuff
eyes look great though
02-13-2012, 09:05 PM
lukasvogl: i think you are right with the bulge. will tweak it in some time.
the reason, i'm working on shaders is, that i have no idea, how to do it right. i don't know, how the skin texture will react on the skin shader in proper light. also i want to nail the head down (the most difficult part).
ernstnobis: thanks. u'll have to wait for the body stuff ;)
progress: as said, try and error most of the time. one moment everything seams in some way right, the next moment it's just false -.-.
but slowly, i'm finding the right mood for her face. playing around with different kind of marking.
rendered with a hdri. no special settings.
02-14-2012, 01:45 AM
cool work!, excuse me, what software are you using for rendering?
02-14-2012, 08:25 AM
StebanM: thank you. You don't have to excuse :). Ask as much as you want, if i can answer it, i'll do.
I'm rendering in Maya with MentalRay. I'm also using sIbl from hdrlabs (http://www.hdrlabs.com/news/index.php), which sets up HDRI lighting in Maya. So i don't have to mess around with lighting at this stage. :applause:
02-14-2012, 06:23 PM
couldn't resist to do a comp and hdri360 turnaround of the light.
link to the video: turnaround (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0p7Tq941Jw)
at the moment i'm texturing the head and sculpting some details. next step will be to add all the fine details etc ... hopefully i'll finish this week the process ... we'll see
02-14-2012, 06:42 PM
that girl looks mean
not so sure about the facial painting design.. maybe less is more in this case? just a thought
02-14-2012, 07:41 PM
thanks :), and again, it's getting really good, great texture and shader work
02-15-2012, 05:48 PM
looking cool so far, a good light on the last image
02-16-2012, 04:31 PM
^agreed, the light in the last image looks great eyes are looking a little weird though unless thats what you were shooting for.
02-16-2012, 05:28 PM
ernstnobis: yeah, less is more. already changed that. thanks.
StebanM: thanks, shader-texture tweaking takes a lot of time -.- .
Marat-Ars & IdanI: thanks you gus, but thats the hdri's credit :). the eyes were not my intention but somehow i like the outcome. look a little bit strange, but not too much to be not believable. i just hope so :D
for now i'm finished with shading work for the face. maybe i'll build the highlight on the lower lid of the eye. but that's it, have to start making her body/cloths.
hope you like the last images. that's the look i'll hope, i can keep till the end.
she looks ab bit sad...
i like your render style...
Inspiering work. She looks really sweet so far. Really looking forward to your next update.
02-18-2012, 11:03 PM
I like how the eyes turned out! In those renderings she reminds me a bit of Tilda Swinton...
Will you do something with the white skin areas in her face?
02-20-2012, 07:32 AM
oglu: thanks. she is sad, because she is going to end one's life..
PKT: thanks too.
Pokinski: tilda swinton, the same what my girlfriend said. maybe i'll tweak those white areas. but don't know yet.
progress: did the retopo of the body. have to fix the connection of head-body.
02-21-2012, 10:15 PM
You realy have made a very good character.
I know this will be a sith lord, but I would like to see her as a Jedi.
Without the stips makup in her face... :)
The first images looks so cool, but I didnīt like the evil touch...
I canīt wait to see this thread updated.
02-23-2012, 07:28 PM
MacAndre : glad u like. Haven't found her story yet, but she is between sith and jedi ... :D
progress : set up the shader for the body-head. connected the head to the body.
began to texture her body. somehow i got to the red burned skin (she lives on a desert-planet). i think i'll keep this idea.
also did a simple rig (no ik-fk, but next time i'll do :D) for posing. tried some poses, but i'm not really happy with one. i like the first one, on the tilted pedestal . . .
i don't know yet, if i'll pose her later on in mudbox, or skin bind her and pose her in maya.
next step will be modeling the assets.
tell me what you think. c&c more than welcome
02-23-2012, 08:00 PM
Amazing character ! I love the second one :)
What kind of assets are you going to model ?
02-23-2012, 08:13 PM
I thought she had pants from the posses. And I think it looks really good, you should totally try giveing her tight pants with a cut right in the knee area, just like the way it looks like it the posses.
Nice stuff (Im not sure about the skin tone)
02-23-2012, 08:20 PM
some face paint ideas
02-23-2012, 08:59 PM
i liked the last pose... seems more forward and aggressive to me.
looks really good... i think the red is a little strong, perhaps balance w/ an adjacent color?
02-25-2012, 09:47 AM
VinceTech : thanks man! first of all i need to model her armor and cloth :D. maybe a speederbike but don't know if the time let's me. and of course the setting.
DanielCortes : thanks for your feedback! the pants are a good idea, for sure i will give it a try  . the overpaint is cool, specially the idea with the color on the neck which runs the whole neck down, and the eye part. thanks again!
03-02-2012, 12:30 PM
finishing to model the assets on her body.
skirt or short trousers? i'm going for stocking, old, dirty and damaged.
thinking of gloves. ..
haven't changed the paintings yet.
hope to start texturing as soon as possible ...
03-02-2012, 09:20 PM
I say shorts. Though right now I cannot tell you why, just it looks more complete and more fitting here. cool model btw, good luck.
great update... i like that leggin idea...
much more to sculpt now... :D
03-06-2012, 08:13 PM
Tamosius: thanks, yea, the shorts are the better decision.
oglu: thanks, yea more to sculpt and paint :curious: ...
update: made uv's  and now i'll begin to texture her assets. make some changes to her paintings and skin. and so on ...
i decided to go for 2k-sized textures. hope this is no overload.
one asset still missing, will do it later
nice uvs... how much textures are you goin to paint..?
03-06-2012, 11:08 PM
Really clean and neat uvs ! Do you know already the kind of fabric and color scheme you are going to use ?
03-09-2012, 01:26 PM
oglu: i don't know, a lot :D
VinceTech: only know, she'll be dirty, but the rest, the overpaint i posted before, that direction.
process: began the painting process. a lot of back and forth. but finding the right solution for me, painting all the textures. at the same time trying to tweak the shader. not that easy.
the mesh is still clean, haven't sculpted any bumps and big scratches.
that's the last update before next week. c&C welcome
03-09-2012, 01:35 PM
Looking good so far ! That be nice to see some really damaged bits, cutted away by sabre lasers hit :)
03-09-2012, 06:45 PM
Awesome scratches, especialy on the left hand side. Are you going to do a reflection mask for them? Looking forward to the rest of the texture work.
03-10-2012, 09:49 PM
The texturing looks awesome. How do you do it? stencils?
Also by any chance do you know how to move the lights around so that i can preview the model in different lighting conditions? i try rotate it, but it doesnt do anything.
Anyways i hope the rest of the texturing is as high quality as the shoulders.
03-11-2012, 10:25 AM
Vincetech: thank you. The idea with the cuttings by the saber NICE. This will be challenging.
fantasymaster: thanks man. I have a reflection mask already, generated out of the scratches. But the shader needs more tweaking.
gyarados: thanks. I used stamps and worked with masks in mudbox. I layered the metal and masked away the color were I wanted to have scratches .
In the lights tab you can choose different light types, and while holding L and left-mouseB and mocking around you should be able to rotate the light. Hope this helpls.
03-13-2012, 04:12 PM
woah, your model looks beastie :)
I would definitely wanna put your model into SWTOR and play it :D
03-14-2012, 08:21 AM
Cruzaficks: thanks man, feelin honored :) .
progress: started posing the character and sculpting the masses, although in the end it will be covered with cloth :D
finished texturing the shirt. doing already the hood. playing with the camera.
nothing done on the overall lighting of the scene.
the metal of the armor isn't finished yet, but i need to make all other textures first and than start refining everything.
c&c welcome. btw tweaked the painting of her face, but they need some more.
03-14-2012, 01:57 PM
very high quality throughout. this oneīs going to be awesome.
like the pose and feel.
the blood stains on the shirt are great.
keep it up
03-26-2012, 09:01 PM
Sweet! Pose and painting very well done. btw Very accurate job I have to say. :)
03-26-2012, 09:05 PM
Fantastic update mate ! Keep going :)
03-27-2012, 06:25 PM
cool! she is so frightened :D
03-28-2012, 04:20 AM
hopefully she didn't shit in her pants. :D
at the moment i'm nonstop back and forth and tweaking textures. one thing i've learned, never change the workflow in the middle of a challenge -.-. next time i'll know better.
need to change the hand pose a little and need to tweak the skin diff and overall specular colors.
here is a different view and without hue.
04-10-2012, 08:51 PM
hej guys, here are my modelsheets, those are screengrabs out of mudbox, next time i'll do less than 90 2k textures. rotating everything with textures on needed time (i think the bumpmap is turned off):
naked with boots on:
hope u like. crits and comments welcome.
i like the strong pose and the sharpnes of the textures... awsome work..
one of my favourites..!
04-10-2012, 09:10 PM
Nice job , keep up the good work . :applause:
04-10-2012, 09:37 PM
well done max.
great model. strong pose. supercrisp textures. nothing to complain here.
looking foreward to your beauty render
04-10-2012, 10:22 PM
i love it max, great work.. i'm really diggin' the boots, i dunno why! i just do.
04-11-2012, 10:07 AM
well done!. good luck!
04-11-2012, 11:24 AM
Great stuff! Can't wait for the beauty render!
04-13-2012, 10:41 AM
Through the universe, nameless and left alone. Don't be afraid.
Finally it's finished! Hope you like. C&C welcome.
04-13-2012, 10:47 AM
Yay ! Congrats for finishing your entry !
Love the beauty render, it does justice to the character !
I like the hair a lot ! The floor could have been a bit more bumpy, it seems a bit flat. But appart from that, really cool artwork !
04-13-2012, 11:04 AM
Great render. wow... congratulations mate!!
great character! like the pose and expression.
i agree with the floor, could more bumpy, would define the reflections much more.
04-13-2012, 11:24 AM
awesome work max.
cantīt find anything to complain about.
great character! congrats
04-13-2012, 12:07 PM
Awesome beauty! Congrats to your final submission :applause:
04-13-2012, 04:19 PM
04-13-2012, 06:18 PM
Congrats with your final image. Very dynamic and beautiful work.
big thanks for the motivation to finish mine..!
04-13-2012, 10:18 PM
nice job.. you surprised me with the hair.. in a good way!
04-14-2012, 06:50 AM
turned out great, really solid work, cheers)
04-14-2012, 07:40 AM
thanks for the kind words. don't payed enough attention to the floor, should have rendered it, and not painted, but over is over.
again, congrats to all entries, there are some awesome among them!
04-16-2012, 07:36 AM
Nice render Max! The hair is a very nice touch.
