View Full Version : Are there any ready to animate rigged humans around?
Shade01 11-15-2003, 01:27 AM Hi, I'm learning Maya, more for animation than anything else. Are there any rigged and ready to animate humans- or whatever on the net so I can get straight down to learning how to animate in Maya?

I know this doesn't directly answer your questio, but maybe it's something to think about.
You can find rigged models out there, or you can make your own models and get plugins to automatically it for you. But your best bet is the rig it yourself. Especially if you want to be an animator! Being an animator doesn't mean that that is all you do. You need to know how the rig works, why it works the way it does, and to know the limits of the rig.
What if you're in the middle of animating something and then all of a sudden it screws up on you. What are you going to do? With even the basic understanding of how the rig works, you can troubleshoot your problem and be on your way. That's easier than waiting around and asking for help.
Making a basic rig is so easy to learn, that it's not worth it to yourself to skip past it. Especially if you want to be an animator.
Here's some links if you want some tutorials.

I hope this helps some. Sorry man, I don't mean to drill you, but I think it's something every animator needs to and should know.
Good luck

While I definetly agree with DarkBane, I think that it is easiest to learn how rigging works by reverse engineering a completed one. A great one to start with would be Ik joe. I've done alot of animation with him and his rig is both flexible and stable. (I'm still learning rigging tricks from him after a year or so)
You can download him here:

Here is a link to an animation I did with him:
Ik Joe throws a box (.mov 1.8mb) (http://www.telusplanet.net/public/edwin/kiaran/animation/JoeThrow.mov)
Good luck!

Gremlin- Nice fight poster you got there. (I'm hoping for the blue guy wins;) )
danniesanchez- where are you going to school? Just curious.
Shade01- you're welcome.

there used to be a good rigging tutorial here
http://cmpa.ca.scad.edu/faculty/fell/
but as you can see, the URL moved. I guess you'll have to mail that professor to get the new URL, and I doubt she'll give it to you if you're not in her class :(.
it also had a downloadable version of a fully rigged biped. the rig was pretty advanced but the most advanced rig i've seen so far for a biped was in "maya character animation" a book.
