View Full Version : Changing the order of the Hierarchy...?
Dudeman 06-10-2002, 07:14 PM Ok, I have 2 different files......
Each file has a character with bones in a hierarchy. They are named the same as each other and are in the same hierarchy.
Although the order in the hierarchy is slightly different in the line up of children of a particular parent joint.
So when I copy keys from one file to the other, the 'paste' becomes out of order when it gets to the point where the order changes.
Is it possible to re-arrange the order in the Hypergraph? Or Copy and Paste by Name?
Thanks again,
Dudeman:thumbsup:

You can export the keys as an anim file (.mov), or you can reorder the joints one of the skeletons.
Yes, you can reorder them in the Hypergraph, although I find that view slow, messy and convoluted for such a simple task. I prefer the Outliner or viewports for that work. Just select the child you want to move and then select the new parent and hit p.

you can do it the hard way : just unparent every joint of the character and the reparent them.
if you just wanna assign a new top root to the whole hirarchie go to the anim menue and select skeleton-reroot. this will bring the currently selected joint to the root of the hirachie

I think I found the solution. Using the Outliner.
But I think I didn't explain myself very well.
Let's say I have 1 parent and 4 children in 2 different files. But in 1 file the four children are in a different order when listed in Hypergraph or Outliner. So when I paste, the order gets messed up naturally.
But I guess I can reorder the children under the same parent in the Outliner with the Middle Mouse Button.
Thanks for your replies guys! Of course if you have anything to add you are most welcome to.

if you have a really big big hirarchie (a character with ik/fk , extra clavial control and and so on) then the hypergraph is actually much better then the outliner to look and change the hirarchy.
you can middle mouse drag and drop your hirarchy in the hypergraph too, without using the parent and unparent command

I disagree. I think this is matter of preference and working style. IMO, the Hypergraph lacks focus when it comes to large hierarchies and complicated rigs. My preference is to use it for troubleshooting purposes.
The Outliner also supports drag reparenting, but I mostly perform parent ops in the world views with the p key. It's faster: no need to open a view or dig around to find what you were already looking at to begin with.
Back to the orignal question: if you don't want to reorder your hierarchy at all, consider exporting the anim to .mov and importing. It uses attr addresses to read/write the data so it shouldn't care about the order.

right it's a preference thing :) but you must agree that it's a little bit difficult to parent in the viewport then you have 4 or more hirarchies lying in the same postion (for an arm e.g.) to pick the right one :)

Not really. I always offset them while I'm rigging. Keeps me out of the other views.
