View Full Version : flickering hair problem
beccabaldwin 11-14-2003, 04:45 PM i'm working on hair, and in the still frames i think it looks alright (still needs tons of tweaking, but i will get to that in due time). but i did a test fly-around and it is flickering like crazy! it's like it is recalculating the hair on each frame. i included an avi of what's going on (beware of nakedness! she has no clothes yet!!! ;))
i'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.. and if there is any way of fixing it? i'm wondering if there is any way of "baking" the hair or something? or converting them to poly's? i'm not sure if this will even fix the problem.. but i will try anything!!!
the animation! (http://cmpa.ca.scad.edu/student/remacdon/hairtest1.avi)
thank you!!

How many frames is that rotation? It looks like its only 30 frames or so, and its damn near impossible to get a non flicking render at that speed. (shes whipping around at around a 30 to 50 miles an hour) Try rendering a 200 frame turnaround and see how it looks. If it still pops come back and we'll figure it out. Really, it looks pretty good for how fast shes spinning. You may want too lower the specularity on the hair a little then the spec pop wont be so noticeable.

make shure you don't have any frizz animation or wiggle speed on it (although it doesn't look like you do). Make shure you reset the dynamics and clear the cash and recalculate the dynamics before you render. And yes a slower rotation would be usefull.
If you want to turn the hair to pollys (altough I don't think it will help) you simpily have to change the hair type from volumetric to geometry. Although this probably isn't the polly conversion you are talking about.
Also it would be great if you could do a tutorial on styling hair in XSI I have been looking all over for a good tutorial and have yet to find one.

thank you guys so much for your help! i ended up figuring out my problem.. and it was something completely off the wall.
at some point i decided to start the hair over and see if i could get a better result.. well, i was working away and i applied a shatter funtion to the hairs in the part and the back of the part since both areas were in need of some extra hair to get rid of bald spots. well, the second i did that, the hair started freaking out again! it was a dumb mistake to try and shatter the hairs on the back of the part since they weren't really in the part itself.
anyways.. i did another test render and this time is looks awesome even animated!
thanks so much for your input, it is so appreciated. :)
