im about to do a composite for a short film, shot in s16. its a wide angle shot showing about a 200 people in front of a cliff, cheering and clapping. the most we can get is about 20. the film will be scanned in 2k and then composited in digital fusion. since scanning is a bit expensive, the minimum amount of film must be used. there are 2 options:either block the extras, lock the camera and reposition them about 9-10 times, or shoot the bg plate and then all the extras in separate passes in front of a bluescreen in dv. since they are going to be scaled down a lot, i dont think there will be any significant resolution issues. i know dv is bad for keying, but as i said, its going to be scaled down a lot. the thing is, doing it this way, will there be any problem matching the bgplate's colour, contrast, resolution etc with the front elements?
and then again, is there any other way to do it?
thanks

It's always a good idea to shoot a clean plate anyways. I'd suggest you shoot the cliff with both extras and without. Then you have a reference for lighting and such for when you go to shoot them on DV. From there the DOP can help light the extras to match, and then any final tweaks can be done in DF.

Be sure to read the chapter on DV 4:1:1 in the DF courseware, as it will help you deal with the compression in the final key.

I would lock the camera and reposition the people...Unless you really need it to move...It will make the final shot much more believable, unless you really want to go thru all the extra cost involved in shooting the GS and compomsiting all of that...

thanks for the replies, i will be going for a plate with a few extras positioned for reference only, and then do the rest with minidv key. unfortunately its going to be a crane-up shot, so its going to be a bit more difficult, if i get stuck anywhere, ill let you know.
thanks
