with softbodies as the surface and a field attached to the foot would be possible. a uniform field should be a good solution.
a while ago i made something like this. snowboards drivin down a hill. and it worked out very good with the softbodies
If you're a bit away from the person (or whatever it is making the footprints) sprites with your imprint texture of choice will take you far. You could use it as a particle event, or simply keyframe their appearance . Very easy to get good results with them in post as well.
If you're close, however, softbodies is a good way to go...
Thanks for your replies!
The idea with the softbodies is nice, but I am a little bit scared of the extrem high resolution, I need for the floor object.
I think I give the sprite particles a try (on a separate render layer and using the resulting images for a displace with camera projection or for a bump in the post)
cheers

For the softbodies, don't use a giant floor object. Instead, animate your character walking through and place little footstep planes at each footstep position. Then render two passes. One with the regular floor and one with the footsteps planes. Use a world space projected floor texture to ensure that the textures fit for each pass. Comp as needed.
