they're on the first page, that's before the subd is turned on, I tend to work with high res meshed just so I can the detail in, and then use subd for the final render, the rock is all displacements

Incredible Stuff!

I will actually give you some crits. For one thing you have WAY too much grain in the images, specially the second one. I think it is making the images a little muddy. Also I think overall the creature could use a little more contrast, you could accomplish that with lighting or more contrast on the textures themselves. Something to draw the viewer to a certain part of the image then have his eye move around it. The background colors are too close to the colors on the creature, you need something to make him pop.

These things are minor and could be dealt with in post work on the image. The model itself is phenomenal, incredible level of detail, hats off to you. Keep it up!

Just one thing though, is there any chance that one day you could model something really crap? just to help some of us mere mortals from feeling so inadequate.. :p

11-14-2003, 08:09 PM
I'm really infatuated with your work here.

I aspire to create models and scenes of this caliber in my own work. But since 3D modeling is only one of the five studios I'm taking here at VCU, I'm pretty bogged down. Hopefully someday.

I was wondering if you'd be willing to post your concept art, if there is any. Also, I'd like some shaded perspective views, w/o textures and materials, because I'm really interested to see and perhaps even adopt your techniques at adding detail, and making it feel solid, instead of feeling like its a bunch of pieces grouped together. You were really able to make this "flow", if that makes any sense.

Anyway, great image, I'd really love to see shaded views.

hey squid, like the model, looks real good. where did you get your influence for it from? there's a video game called star wars galaxies and in it there's a monster called a merek, looks a lot like yours with the 4 walking legs and the 2 attacking legs with scythe-like pointies at the end. not implying that you ripped it off, just wondering if you knew the coincidence.

HOly crap! love it! definatly the style of character that appeals to me. Could we see a render of the back of the creature? I really like those transparent tubes peaking out, and want to see them better. (i tend to include them in things i draw and picture them as some terrible fuel or drug or something extracted from a victim).

yeah, all the textures on everything I've ever done are procedurals, which in a way is easier but it means some details are always left out, ( scratches in the right places on paintwork or rust, and things like skin wrinkles on organic things ) I have bodypaint 1 but I'm not to keen on it, I'm hoping to upgrade to 2 soon though :)

hm... yea, like one other has mentioned... the head does seem to be a bit off. and the bot seems to lack a 'certain' foundation.

-there's a lot features tossed in there which doesnt blend in smoothly. ---jus too many elements to be used for a "war-type-character."

but the detail/effort put into that piece, iS admirable.

Modeling is very complex and well done, rendering is awesome but the character concept sucks  Very well done though, you got skills
