hehe, it reminds me of my final project in my Digital Animation 1 class, where we had to create something entirely out of lego pieces and then animate it coming together in maya. although obviously, this commercial is about 1000 times more complicated than my project ended up being.

Friend of mine worked on this..fun stuff. Those Coppola kids have it going on. And yeah for official purposes they're mega blocks :P :D

P.S. Houdini+Lightwave for those that like to know that sort of thing.

Im going to take a stab in the dark here and say:

a: Each lego is dynamic. Each lego is then combined to build the car. Then a negative gravity field is applied to the dynamic legos. Then they run it backwards to make it appear that the legos are falling in place.

or

b: Each lego is dynamic. Each lego has a goal position that will place them together to form a car. The legos have a gravity field and spin applied to each of them. The simulation is run and each lego falls into its specified goal position.

or

c: This commercial has been an ongoing project for over 20 years in which each lego block was hand animated. (I can see Pixar doing something like this)

i wanted to start a thread on here about that, but forgot to last night :)

I wanted to get some insight into how this commercial was done.

I didn't get all the particulars, but I do remember the bricks are particle behavior, the whole thing was indeed built and then flew away, all the footage is run backwards.

They had some kind of funky scripting and such going on in houdini to make it do it in the patterns they wanted etc. in those graceful moves and I believe to help with the initial assembly itself, but that's about all the info I recall secondhand.

tell me about it! those masochists over at Pixar hand-animate everything they possibly can. I'll bet they'd even hand animate fur if they had enough grunts working there.

AT&T had a comercial a while back that was simalar to this with a bunch of legos..but it was way more complicated than the element lego spot becuase the legos would morph into a lion and a speeding train and somthing else..it was done in xsi, but it was way more impressive..surprisec no one gave that one a nod

I've seen it floating around a lot, and yes it is impressive.
But i think it's older than last year, so it wouldn't have gotten a nod.
