View Full Version : Mouth Modeling - I need advice

I need advice. Sorry in advance, I realize I'm asking a broad question.

I'm about to model a character that needs to have very broad mouth shapes. Rigging it shouldn't be a problem, but it's my first time modeling something like this. She's a lot like Lilo Pelekai from Lilo & Stich. How would you go about modeling a mouth like this? Do I just model her with a LOT of detail around the mouth area? What should my default shape be? Any tips would be welcome.

Your base object does not need an awful lot of geometry, what it needs is proper edge flow. Since the mouth can produce a wide variety of shapes, you'll want to mimic the muscles underneath, and that shape is simply an O shape folded on itself. Keep it low poly and then throw on a subdivision modifier to have a smooth surface that deforms smoothly.
