Hi, I could use some suggestions for the most efficient solution to animate the mouth on my new character, Milo:

I've tossed around a few ideas, like creating some kind of projection, but then I want to know if there's a creative way to animate the displacement map so that the mouth stays slightly indented if seen from the side. Or should I just use blend shapes and color the faces within the mouth region all black?

hmm, why aren't my images showing within the post?

I'm really looking for a way to animate 2D on a 3D surface and then make blend targets for all the poses. For example the expressions on this LEGO puppet:

Obviously I could make blend expressions from the geometry, but I would rather have black paint projected onto the smooth head surface, and then animate the black paint using blend targets.

I also want to do this for Milo, but one step further I want to somehow apply the form of the painted on shape as a guidline for a displacement map, so that the mouth is somewhat indented if you look at it from the side - while it animates.

i'm sure something like this is possible in Maya but I need help with the how...help?
