Hey there...

I am a bit of a MAX user looking to get familiar with Maya, i have watched many a videos, read tutorials, and am well on my way. there is just a few tools that i am kinda used to in max...

loop select - you select an edge(s) and then hit this button to continue the selection of edge(s) until a corner or pole is hit.
ring select - you select an edege(s) perpendicular to a loop, hit this button to continue selecting edges until it hits a corner or pole.

"connect" computer draws an edge between selected edges or verts (not polys), can select multiple edges and connect to get even division between selected edges. (i like this a lot)

i have been using the split poly tool to mimic this with the magnet snaps. but its just to slow comparitively speaking.

so if anyone could point me to standard maya 5 tools that are "similar" or plugin/scripts that allow me to model using a "similar" workflow. maybe even share a few ways you perfer to model...

any and all information would greatly be appreciated...

thanks

you seem to be looking for the standard max-meshtools functionality.
unfortunately maya lacks this functionality. however, there are several options: get the mj-polytools-scripts for free or get the commercial byron's poly tools plugin.
there's also another free set of meshtools/mirai-like tools that's called ice poly tools and comes as a mel-script.

be aware that the scripts sometimes are really unbelievably slow but it seems that byrons poly tools which are implemented as a plugin, let you actually work on something more complex than a simple cube. :]

you should be able to find download links through the forum search and google.

thanks GIjoe

i have seen byron's stuff, and dled his free stuff. I am a student and purchasing anything right now is kinda outta the question.

i will look up mj-poly tools...
and this ice poly tools...
if its like mirai then i am down for it... i have seen lots of good modeling vids on that software, but of course i can't use it :)

any other information would be great...thanks

Maya actually does have a loop select, just go to:

Edit Polygons > Selection > Select Contiguous Edges

(you could make a hotkey for it)

But yeah, get MJPolyTools. I used to use it all the time before I bought Byrons!

stallion151,

Also get the "Bonus Game Tools" off of Alias's website. Many amazing tools in that kit like Draw Split, Draw Select and a bunch of others.

ice poly tools were mentioned once here in this very forum ;)
you should be able to find the link via forum search. i only remember that it was available on a chinese site.

if you're still having problems locating it i could put it online or send via email.
