View Full Version : Non-Shadow-Casting Transparent Material?

Is there a transparent material(or trick) that does not allow lights to cast shadows when a material's opacity is at 0(zero), ie, totally invisible?

I have a character which needs part of his clothing(which deforms) to become hidden at some point. I cannot remove it from the mesh, as it's going to be physiqued. So the material avenue is the only way. Appling a transparent material to the object work alright, but, the object continues to cast shadows.

Any idea of how to get around this?

should be no problem if you're using a raytrace shadow buddy :)

btw, your not on msn :P

You could try selecting the object that you dont want to cast shadows, and right-click and scroll down and choose "properties". Then uncheck the "cast shadows" box. Hope that helps and thats what you were looking for.

Well, the problem is, that this part of the character is part of one mesh. I cannot disable shadows by object without disabling all shadows for the character...which is not an option.

Quin, I'm trying to use area shadows. It does'nt work with anything but raytrace, which is an undesired effect, as well as far too costly in cpu usage.

I'm fairly sure this cannot be done. I'll keep looking for plugins.

*sigh*

Thanks for the replies anyway, guys.

Why don't you make it a separate object, with separate properties, but apply the same instanced physique to both objects ?

You could just delete that part of the mesh, but keep the original model.
I fing it helps when I use models that are specialised, such as one for walking, one for sitting, one for closeups, ect

Well, that would be nice, but that's not really an option for this particular project. Besides that, I have morph targets and physique to worry about, and it would be much simpler to just be able to hide the sucker. I guess the instanced physique could work. I'll give that a try.

Thanks guys.
