I can't reveal my source, but a well-known developer of C4D plugins is almost ready to release another groundbreaking plug capable of the most stunning things.
The only info I've got is the working title, which is "Multispectral growth" (will most likely be something more catchy once it's released) and that the tool is capable of adding volume to models in a far more refined way than the usual move-all-polys-along-normal trick.
The developer claims that using Multispectral Growth will allow the artist to "make any model bigger, more hairy and generally flabby and frizzy".
I've managed to steal a jpg from the upcoming demo. Apparently these are final renders of the same model, the one on the right showing the resulting mesh after bringing up the tool dialog, setting three parameters and clicking 'OK' - a stunning result from only two seconds of extra work:
