View Full Version : MEH! ShortFilm!
Scaledblackhorse 11-03-2011, 03:16 PM Hello Guys!! I whanted to share my student shortFilm with you all, its called Meh! Is a short film aimed to show a strong knowledge of animation, pantomime and acting principles trough a fun and entertaining story line. It was developed with the idea of making basic animation exercises like a run cycle, walk cycle, stand up, baseball swing etc. into a non-cliche story with original and appealing characters that could entertain everyone who is willing to see it.
Hope you enjoy it!!

Edit: Changed the post since it came off as a bit unnecessarily sarcastic and a bit on the offensive side. My standpoint on the film can be viewed in the post below.

Best part of this film is probably that you thank your parents but show child abuse in the film as some sort of a gag.. Your title pretty much summed it up, though the animation was decent enough to have me watch it all the way through this wasn't not my cup of tea.
Man chill out, this is not child abuse, is a CARTOON, is a shortfilm aimed to show my skills as an animator, I'm sure that is not accurate to say that W.B. cartoons are showing animal abuse because they show duffy duck being shot in the face, or say that South Park endorse child killing when they show poor Kenny dying in horrible ways, or that Call of Duty, in some way, promotes war.
Is a cartoon and is funny because is NOT real! Hope you understand the difference.
I’m glad you enjoy the animation enough to keep watching it till the end. That was the whole point of this.
I thought this wasn’t necessary but…
Disclaimer:
All the characters and events in this short film are entirely fictional. The violence expressed in the short film is aimed to entertain only. No philosophical or moral view point should be stated about this short film since its only purpose is to show its author's skills in character animation.
Thank you.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will try to make a less offensively written post.
Now, consider that you posted this as a short film with an "entertaining storyline". Story-wise, the film lacks severely (this is only my opinion). Generally characters have clear motivations to speak of that drive the characters. I find this lacking in your film except for the little devil who wants to play. The big devil responds to this being a jerk all the way through credits and this is making the film pointless to me.
The film might have been funnier (for me) if the small guy had an opportunity to get back to the big guy. As it is now, its rather one-sided bullying.
I just didn't find that being funny, that's all. For those who did, there's your audience.
Good luck in the future.
edit: Showed it to a friend, he laughed his ass off. I guess we're just different in terms of taste, then again, comedy is not a given science.

Awesome man! That’s very cool from your part to say that, really really appreciate it.
I want to share a bit more about the storyline I chose for the Short film.
I decide to go for a character configuration of a strong personality that no matter what won’t change; for example you can see clearly this configuration on Dr. House and Sherlock Holmes (literature and also in the movie), were the principal character is exposed to events that make the audience think his is going to change his point of view or his ways of action, but on the final act the character does not change at all.
I love how this configuration plays with the expectations of the audience and make the whole experience very entertaining to see. I decided to apply this configuration to the Dad Devil.
Making him have a little cute and playful son, will make the viewer think that he will be nice with him no matter how evil he is, that’s because what most parents do - be nice with their sons no matter what- right there is where the short film is supposed to create the expectation on the viewer, and then I contradict that expectation making him act like a jerk all the way trough.
This conflict between the story and the expectations of the viewer is what I find very entertaining.
The film might have been funnier (for me) if the small guy had an opportunity to get back to the big guy. As it is now, its rather one-sided bullying.
Man it’s Awesome you mention that! because I actually had that in mind when I did the story boards, I decided to go with the end you saw because when I was receiving feedback early in the proses I got one comment about the story line of Mr. Brooks, in that movie at the end ESPOILER ALERT! everything about the main character pretty much came back to what it was at the beginning. That sort of ending makes the viewer wonder about the characters way longer than the story or movie lasts , what was the point of what happen? What he is going to do now? Is that just? What’s the point? I love when that happens to me, it makes me more engage with the story and more connected with the characters, though not all people like those endings because seems like the story was void, some people need resolution to feel good about the story they just saw.
I going to post more about the proses of the Short Film, I think doing this can help me debug my workflow and also can help anyone who is interested in developing their own project

I see what you did there and why, and its for the same reason I didn't like it. I guess it has to do with me being very dry on this particular comedy. And for the very same reason my friend burst out in laughter. My friend kindly pointed out to me that there is devils there, what did I expect? I guess violence can be fun, but if it gets to one-sided it risks of turns abusive and for me that stopped being funny and I guess also at the risk of polarizing your audience who either hate it or love it. This however isn't necessarily a bad thing as one can't please everybody every time.

I'm sorry that you didn't, you could have won me over again by having the little guy get back on the big guy, and I'm sure the people who already liked the film wouldn't mind either ;)
In terms of resolution, I'm not sure it has to do only with the people watching it as much as perhaps a combination of that and what it takes to tell a good story. I really liked Mr. Brooks, as dark as it where, and an open ending fits there as long as all subplots are tied together, on the other hand, other story's might need more resolution to leave the audience satisfied.
As a side note, nice to see how the storyboards translated into animation.

I think the problem people would "possibly" have is the idea that it's a father son pair. In cartoons based around violence like this (WB mostly) they're normally unrelated. The idea of a son wanting to play catch and the father beating him, I don't know, kind of bothers me too. Especially at the very end where the little demon doesn't fight back, and the drunken dad just hits him again. Yet if I just think of it as a big demon and small demon, no family relation, suddenly I'm fine and I can see how it's comical.
Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
Otherwise it's well animated and the characters look great. Good job!
