This is the first post on cgtalk where i have posted work. I need things to put into my portfolio for college and i need to kinda 'tap' my resources for reviewing my entries. i thought this might be a good place to start. i need this to be as good as i can make it, so please critique it to hell :)

this is the 'character' Predator from the two movies and the comic books. Pics are all over the net if you need references.

modeling is done in 3ds max 5.1 using poly modeling

thanks guys

Looks good. I think you should add the dreads though, and the rest of the body, off course.

Nice start!

i think ur in the worng forum bro, u should switch it over to focused crits. just my opion. i just happend in here by accident and found it.

i say this because its a nice start and i think u could get better feed back in focused crits.

but now for the crit sorry to many things going on at once. hes looking good for the start but its to symetrical.

i think the eyes might be a little small been a whike since ive seen the movie so i could be wrong.

the biggest crit i have is the subject matter. i think a more original idea would be stronger.

what i mean is this. its been my experience that the studios dont want to see whats been done they want to see new stuff to sho your talent. u wowuldnt show micky mouse drawing to get a job at disney. show good tronbg modeling and that will be the best thing u can do for your portfolio. that doesnt mean trash what ur doing. just remeber it for ur next model. its hard to show ur talents and creativity if ur doing the work from someone elses creativy.

also u should give a front and side shot for us to check proportions. good luck keep up the good work

looking good u need some refinement my biggest crit is the top of his head uve got "stripes" and there coming out on ure sub d version lots of long polys close together causes problems and they arent needed, weld them together and try and keep them squarer

thanks alot guys, this is the feedback i was wanting. i was thinking last night after i posted that it belonged in the focused critiques, but i dont know how to switch it, help?

i will continue to work on it, and of course i will add dreds.
i agree with the comment made about not being the most 'creative' of subject matter, and i guess it wouldnt be the most appropriate entry to my portfolio, but i am not looking for a job quite yet, just college. i hope by the end of this project to do some sort of 'movie poster' in celebration of the new AvP movie coming out (which i am totally stoked about!) thanks alot guys and keep em comin. i'll try to post an update sometime today.

I have no experience in the professional 3D industry, but nonetheless, I'm going to have to disagree with ukyo a bit on this one.

In terms of modeling, I think modeling something that has already been done is an excellent example of resourcefulness and capability. Especially if the only references that exist are references that were not meant to be used to be used for 3D modelling.

Quite often, a modeler is expected to model things from concept drawings by another artist. I guess if you chose to look at it as "someone else's creativity" you could, but the fact is, you would be the one who brings it together.

Another point that I would grant, would be the complexity of the subject matter. This ain't no smiley face. The various features that you have to get just right to pull this model off will further demonstrate your eye for detail and ability to render from references.

I will, however, agree with ukyo on one point, showing your creativity is a big plus, especially if you want to come across as a diverse and creative artist and not just a modeler. But I'm sure you already know that and I'm not going to bore you to death mith my opinions on that matter.

Anyhow, great model. I'd maybe add horny knobs to the end otf the bumps on his side crests just for effect, and oh yeah, add dreads! :)

thanks for the crit's guys, i dont have much to post right now, but i did work on his forehead a bit, and i started adding dreds. i was wondering in everyone's opinion what the best way to texture the dreds are, since they are semi-cylindrical shaped, and still curve. i know there's a better way than what i'm thinking, so could someone give me an idea there? and in response to the nose comment, predator has no nose...
