I'm nearing the end of this and about to make some final decisions on elements, vibe colour & style, any feedback is appreciated :)







I made the layout and lighting in 3ds Max - colour correction, painting and textures in Photoshop - extra texturing in Painter

This looks good, and while I don't particularly like the aesthetic choices of colors, I suspect it's not something you can change (assuming you are depicting a known landmark)?

Thanks for stopping by Rob, when the comment popped up, I was preparing to be ripped apart by you!

Actually I chose the colours - and had pretty tight control over them - so that's my bad taste there! - do they feel sickly pastel to you?

I've looked over the course you've been providing - quite interested in that, thanks for giving so much back to the community ;)

Gee, I hope I don't give off the impression that I'm going around ripping people's work apart for enjoyment. I'm really just trying to help people see things they probably haven't noticed enough about their own works--the same way that other artists had helped me in the past, which made all the difference in the world in how I grew as an artist.

Do you think it's a personal preference?

In the other piece, the overall color palette works because it feels a bit more cohesive and integrated.

But the truth is, many buildings in China (or areas of high Chinese population) are painted with questionable taste (by my personal standards), so your depiction could in fact, be dead on accurate in some ways. That's why I asked if this was a known landmark. :D

I guess it comes down to whether the color choices for local colors are supposed to be aesthetically appealing, because for example, you could be portraying the actual taste of the people who have build the building in the first place, and you have no control over the choices they made (even if it's fictional). So for example, if I'm painting a building in a part of a city that's kind of low-income and somewhat gaudy looking, I won't try and make everything look slick and cosmopolitan, because that's just not fitting. But if I were painting a building in a posh, rich, neighborhood, designed by famous architect, then it would be a very different look.

It would help if you explained the context of this image--what it's meant to express and convey. Is there a premise? What's the narrative?

No, not at all! - I just have a high opinion of your observations, which often segway into areas I don't think enough about, and no exception here. I really enjoy it but it's never been directed at me before :)

Interesting thoughts about 'culturally ugly' styles and colour schemes. With personal work, I wouldn't want to spend time creating anything that I thought was ugly to begin with. Who would I be satisfying with that?!

This was a craftsmanship task for me, to spend more time in 3d before I corner myself in photoshop. In the past noticing incorrect scale, perspective and errors bugged me. I think I was happy to overlook these mistakes while I made them.

You'll see similarities with my other image of course, and I wanted to continue with the symbolic elements and the process to practice my own convictions. Purpose, beauty, love, fragility and dilapidation (of myself as this building - i guess), created with optimism and then torn away by the elements and other things.

I stewed on ideas for a while, approached the work technically and am now trying to appraise it more artistically.

Yea, general colour balance doesn't hit me till I play with the 'colour balance' in photoshop, then something pings.

I feel like its technically alright but fails on an 'impact' level - if I were to finish this up and move on, I could make adjustments on the next piece and learn from this one

I think you’re killing it with too much strong cyan (center top square of r0, g255, b255), and by killing necessary value contrast with the yellow of the building with it also (see the grayscale version on lower left image). The sky consists totally of tints/tones of cyan. The “green” in your building is a slightly green shifted cyan tone also. I’d darken the sky while shifting the hue and warm up the illuminated area of the ground, too. The woman is not working for me as a silhouette, as she should be lit by sunlight as the building facade is. She’s too small of an object to be shrouded in a cloud shadow.

Another issue , IMO, is the image has that quirky sterile 3d rendered look written all over it, or strongly evident under the Photoshop painted layers. What I mean by quirky and sterile is the clean and repetitive structures mixed with overtly deliberate chaos or contrived debris and distress.

The PO reflects the effect of shooting upward with a wide lens and capturing a blue sky with a polarizing filter attached, spun to darken the sky. You may not like my purplely sky color choice. It’s just a drastic suggestion to pop the building out more dramatically, along with the darker inherent value of that color at strong saturation.

The crops are more interesting than the whole comp. The rendering of the birds, posture of the lady, and the attention to the signage, along with the strewn bricks, have power, but perhaps there is some element missing to complete the storyline.

Thanks! I think I'll get into painting on this again - and try make at least 2 structural changes in 2d to break up monotony, tweak the values and introduce some other big element if I can ;)

thanks for your thoughts Quadart - you're right about the 'sterile' 3d effect

painted over this a bit - but I think it's pretty much all over - weird how I do like the crops but the larger image is left wanting



its quite a beast too @ 5000 x 7000px
