View Full Version : How do I rig clothes?

I've gone through a flag tutorial, using ncloth on the flag and attaching it to the pole to collide with. I'm trying to do this now with a shirt. I changed it to ncloth then made my human model a passive collider. Doesn't seem to be working like the flag.


When my character is standing still the shirt looks like a hard surface. Doesn't move at all despite the wind set up to blow it. When I move my character, the leg for example during an animation, either nothing happens to the shirt or if the leg collides against it, I get an error message saying too large of a frame movement.

EDIT: Just tried again. If I don't have the shirt on the character the wind blows it non-stop. It's when I move it to the character which I intended to act as a ncloth collider, it stopped working.

PS: I'm using Autodesk Maya 2011.

What you're trying to do is totally feasible. See the following example:

There are a few things that can help you out. Sorry if I'm saying things that you already know.

1) Right click your time slider, then go to Playback Speed and make sure Play Every Frame, Free is checked. nCloth needs to calculate per frame, if you're playing in real time then the nucleas just won't be able to keep up and you'll get the "frame skip too large" error.

2) You might need to adjust your space scale. First go to your animation preferences (the small button at the bottom right hand of Maya right next to the Key icon). Then click Settings. Take note of what linear working unit you're in. By default, it's centimeters. Maya's nucleus assumes that you're working in meters. I'll skip a lengthy explanation here. If your scene is in centimeters, you'll need to go to your nucleus. Select your nCloth object, click the nucleus tab, scroll down to Scale Attributes, and change the Space Scale from 1 to 0.1. Your cloth should behave a little better.

3) A keyed object moving is one thing, but if you interactively move your arm while the cloth is simulating, your nCloth won't be able to keep up and it won't do anything.

It's long, but full of really good information, it's easy to understand and with it, you should have your sim up and running in no time. Note, you'll have to download the .mov file, but it's not that big.
