Just to let you know that along with a new update to Mesh Surgery form teh downloads area to 1.15, we have a new Mesh Brush Script available from (and as part of the download, you will need Mesh Surgery 1.15 to run this script).

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/

This script allows you to interactively paint hair onto an objects surface using the Mesh Surgery Mesh Brush.
thus

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/meshbrushimages/hairbot02.jpg

and thus

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/meshbrushimages/toonhair02.jpg
(rendered with the awesome Sketch & Toon).

You get control over length (even control using pressure there), kinkyness, gravity, kink size, hair detail etc...

Have fun :)

For some reason I can't get gravity to do anything, all splines go straight up... no matter what I set it at. :hmm:

Gravity works fine here (PC).

This script is soooo what i've been looking for!

Thanks Per/Paul for a nice surprise, once again.

(Edit) I noticed one thing:
If you're painting multiple layers of hair - i.e. creating different hair splines rather than adding to the same spline with the "Compound" option checked - you have to rename the previous splines from "Mesh Brush Spline" to something else, otherwise the new splines will not be painted.

Thanks for the reply. Can I get the Beta Test too?

you may need to increase the Knot factor (detail). also don't paint on a straight vertical surface only (as it's particle vector based, which means it wont be able to turn downwards).

The hair brush script is a free addon to the Mesh Surgery C4D plugin. The sketch&toon is a new module by Maxon.

I think the beta cycle for S&T is over by now (and it is a Maxon project)

hmm, i don't get that here, instead the new splines are just added to the old object (just like the spline paint brushscript), you can just move the mesh brish splines obejct further down too, and it will generate a new one for you.

Funny, I tested this issue twice before posting.

But now there's no way of repeating it - everything works as you described. (Not that it was any serious in the first place).

Now, back to making hairy things.......:)

Thanks Per! - excellent additions!!

I was messing with MS again last night (who needs sleep right!?) to get a feel for all the features, and the mesh brush alone just keeps making me smile! :D

I must be missing something - I got the 1.15 from the downloads, but where is the Hair script again!?

Per-Anders
11-08-2003, 10:40 AM
In the same zip as the cdl/xdl file. If you unzipped it in a busy folder you might have difficulty finding it again :D however not to worry, it's also available for download from the scripts page

http://www.peranders.com/c4d8/ms/

then click on the link to additional mesh brush scripts, just above the videos.

edit : i just realised you might have downloaded from Pauls site, and i don't know if he included the Hair Brush script in his zips, in which case you'll have to go and download it from the scripts page as above.

kromekat

Oh I got it from the scripts page now - my cache must have been still on yesterdays page!

The upgrades are never zipped for me, they are always just the pure xdl file straight down to my desktop!? :)

Per-Anders

ah, i zip em on my site, Paul might not on his, you can download from either site it shouldnt' make much difference (provided the version number is the same) the links to each site are on the pages. :)

Wow, all those cool meshbrushes convinced me to buy this instead of 8.5...

I'm wondering though, is the hairbrush render intensive?

Keep in mind that if you want Sketch & Tune you'll also need 8.5.

It seems that MS doesnt uses "live" selection of normals while painting. (Like SurfacePainter does, MS= green hairs(parallel) SP= red hairs (normals direction).

You have the strength set to negative value.
Thats why your hair is having an electric shock!!

yes it does... but you have to have "Compound" switched on for COFFEE to update it's brushes normals direction.

Anything about the JigSaw issue?

Or have I missed something?

Yup.
It is pretty tedious to double post, both here and there!

I hereby promise to only post to MS-Forum.

Letīs get more busy over there!

Oh,and as a last note over here regarding MS.
It is simply great. Very great.

Oh yeah I know - I guess I'll probably get the upgrade before the months out, but in oreder of priority of extremely useful tools, MS won! :)

Sketch and Tune looks fantastic, but I think I probably need an ugrade to BP2 first unless some client comes along and asks for something that S&T can do, in which case.. they'll be paying for it! ;D

Can anybody tell me how heavy (on the processor) the hair brush is?

Does it slow your scene etc?

Thanks.

It creates splines so it does zilch to your processor :)

To render is a different story. Simply sweeping a circle spline with the hair splines, your system can crawl to a halt (when rotating viewports etc). But I suppose its just the same with Hair Department.

Of course you can always hide the hair in the editor to speed things up.

Iīd say SolidSpline Pro is a must in these cases.

hair painting seems to freeze on me..get to start brushing and creates a few hairs then seems to freeze and not continue painting any ideas..what i'm doing wrong?

with regards speed, i should mention that when Sketch & Toon comes out, the render speed is pretty swift.

flingster - maybe try making sure you have the soft selection set to "No-Falloff" and see if that helps, in the other modes it's linked to the brush being within range of a vertex to modify, so that may be what you're coming up against.

Can those splines be animated with the HairDepartment animation feature?

tcastudios
11-10-2003, 10:54 AM
I had the same thought, but couldnīt get it working. I only put the ext. "hsk" to it and no go. I assume there is more to it than just doing that.

Cheers
