View Full Version : Fish scales shader
Nicool 11-07-2003, 01:03 PM Hye,
I'm searching for a method to get a quite good render for this fish. Simply get a credible highlight to get rid of this "clay" render. Thanks
The image on i'm working on:

Hey, the model of the head looks great. I'd be guessing the fish scale texture will be quite involved. Needs a good scale texture and bump. Also the fish seems to be slightly transparent, and has a glowing look, so you may want to check this tutorial (http://www.motiondesign.biz/sss_start.html) to simulate that.

Please help me :)
I don't find a solution. I think that the highlight appear whe the cam normal has a low angle with the scale face. So how to build a shader to do it : highlight function to the angle made with the cam normal, respecting a threshold?

can we see a render of the progress so far??
also, have you added a bump map. This will get you those nice little highlights in all the scales I think.
Brett.

Bonjour, after seeing your post i instantly tried to recreate GoldFish scales. This RAR contains a sample movie and the Maya Project i worked on. Hope you will find this shader realistic enough!

is that just a lambert shader?

No it is a Blinn Shader with an orange/red color, and the specular color is turned yellow. Then i turned the ambient color to a dark orange, so it simulates subscattering (At least the darkest parts are not black). And then you have to apply a nice fish scale Bump map.
It may not be photorealistic, but it's more a pixar look.

:hmm: Bad news :hmm:
I made a back up of my computer burning on a CD all the files I want to keep safe. Then I deleted them from my computer. Next week, I wanted to work on this scene (on the fish especialy)... but the CD had been distroyed ! Melted down as if someone did it with a cigaret.
Hopefully, I think I've on another CD a base mesh of the character. But not performed (anatomy and poly) and without the clothes! I hope it will not happend to you.

I feel your pain brudda!
I lost some stuff a while back. Faulty network at the place I study. Corrupted my files.
