Hey guys just wondering if an of you can help me here, I have got maya 3 for a little while so im having a pop at learning some,, I have to say its dam sweet , I really like it, in fact im loving it so far, but im having a few problems,, and Im wondering if u ppl can help

im currently a max user hence the way all my q's relate to my max tequniques...

- how can I mirror a object in the same way as 3dsmax so I can work on one half whilst the other half updated automatically I have tried mirror but cant seem to make a instance in this way also I have tried making a duplicate and turning it round and stuff what do I do?

- when extruding say 4 faces at the end of a cube maya extrudes each one as a separate rectangle so I have to go back and delete the geometry inside the extrusion then merge all the verts to make it one shape,, surly this is bit of a pain is there another way??

- can I do something like cutting and slicing faces in max?? and how

- where do I find all the cool texture mapping stuff, is it a matter of using the paint functions, and painting on a object in 3d id rather work by creating mapps, uvw unwrap style ???

- and also is there any way to turn on realtime lighting like there is in max so when i more the light its applied the light in realtime to the object???

sorry about all these what im sure are simple questions!!!

1. select the object, edit-duplicate (go into the options). hit instance and set -1 for the axis you wanna mirror.

2. after you've extruded, look in the channel box there is an attribute called "keep faces together". set this to on (1).

3. i don't know max :D , but cutting maybe means the split polygon tool. select your surface go to edit poly-split poly tool. then select on one edge the point you wanna split and and another one too, and keep going on until you're finished. then hit the "Enter" key.

4. all the poly texture stuff (i guess you mean them) you can find under edit poly-texture. there are severall tools, and i can't explain them all here. so if you have a specific question to them would be better

5. press the 7 key on your keyboard
(4-wireframe, 5-shaded, 6-textured, 7-lights)

btw : is your avatar from "Street Fighter" ?? i love this game

you can actually play street fighter, and many other cps1/cps2 games over a network. check out nebula (a cps1/cps2/neogeo emulator):

http://nebula.emulatronia.com/

of course you need to own the original arcade boards to legally play the ROMS, but I wont tell
