Hi everyone,

I'm Alican Serbest. I've been directing short films since 1999 with a group I founded called Babun Film. You can see some of our work at www.babun.org (http://www.babun.org). I also worked as a professional compositing artist between 2006-2011 and worked on a lot of commercials and feature films. For the last 1.5 years I've been working as a character animator while also being an animation student in Animation Mentor from which I graduated last December.

http://www.babun.org/cgtalk/otomat/concepts/mainstreet.jpg

For the last few years, I had this short animation project waiting on side called The Automat, which is about a lonely guy in a not too distant future where our planet is invaded by a giant alien species who took our water sources. Even though they are not aggressive, their sizes and their search for liquid resulted in great devastation and our civilization crumbled. In that future, our lonely and nameless hero strikes a one-sided friendship with a woman in a picture on a vending machine. And when that automat is taken by aliens for the liquid inside, he goes after it.

http://www.babun.org/cgtalk/otomat/concepts/trainstation.jpg

We started this project recently. Concept arts are finished and for production part, we got some very talented people in our crew who are already working on it. Ensar Yanar (http://turx.cgsociety.org/gallery/) and Kaan Kucuk (http://kaankucuk.carbonmade.com/) are doing character models (EDIT: Unfortunately Ensar Yanar became unavailable after our project started so we need a very experienced character modeler for our main character). Alper Aksit (http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=31634546&locale=en_US&trk=tab_pro) , who is also currently working in Double Negative as an animator, is our animation supervisor. Pavel Cucka (http://www.pavelcucka.com/) will be leading our matte painters. There are also other modelers responsible for different aspects of our project.

http://www.babun.org/cgtalk/otomat/concepts/man.jpg

But we are still in need of more talent. We'll be using Maya for animation and rendering. So if you think you are good at one of the roles we list below, please feel free to contact me at aserbest@gmail.com and send me your reel or samples from your previous work. I'll be able to give extra details about the project like extra concept art and script once you are in the team.

http://www.babun.org/cgtalk/otomat/concepts/street.jpg

It's a non-profit movie with no budget except what I have for my salary as an animator. So I can't promise any payment. But anyone participating in the project will get credit. And of course you'll be free to use any material you worked on, anywhere you like. All of us aim for this to be something we'll proudly show, so it will be a great portfolio material. Finally, I'll be opening a Kickstarter page to try and pay participants if I can. But that's definitely not a promise and it'll only be a small bonus if we got any budget through that channel.

Right now, we are mainly looking for people for these roles:
- Modeling (Especially for buildings)
- Texturing / Shading (Especially need Seniors on this)
- Simulation

This list can change in time, so I'll update it whenever we need new needs.

Cheers and thanks in advance!

Hey thebest,

Yeah we're still looking for modelers. I'm not sure that I understand what you meant by fully available but can tell that everyone involved has full time jobs beside this project. I checked your portfolio by the way and I would want to give you some abandoned train and car models for starters if you would like. If it's okay for you, just email me at aserbest@gmail.com.

Cheers!

Hey everyone,

I'm happy to say that our project is going along quite nice. But since most of the team is working full time jobs, it's taking time. So to move things faster, we need more modelers (especially for environment modeling) and texture artists. If you want to join, feel free to mail me at aserbest@gmail.com and we can always find some things to do for you :)

Cheers!

Hey mate,

I'm a Character TD / Rigger and would be interested in collaborating full-time over the Christmas holidays-- and possibly for longer part-time once I'm working.

You can see my reel here: www.jaredtaylor3d.com (http://www.jaredtaylor3d.com) / http://vimeo.com/33760121

Hey Mehul,

Thanks for asking! We are using Maya and right now it looks like we'll be rendering with V-Ray but we're still making some tests. Unfortunately we have enough Compositors right now. I would like to get back to you if we need some extra hand on Lighting tho, if that's okay with you.

Thanks again!

Hey,

Those environments are great. Do you still need any help? I'm a maya generalist and you can check my portfolio here (http://simonhildwein.com) and here for traditional (https://picasaweb.google.com/108433617232406170221/TraditionalArt?authuser=0&feat=directlink) drawing. I could imagine helping you with almost everything, (except ZBrush, I dont have it ). I have a strong background in Illustration. I like especially enviroment modeling, Matte Painting / 3d Matte Painting. But I also like animation.

Another Idea: I could do a title sequence....

Hello! The concept is really well done, and I can really see this being an awesome piece when it's done. I noticed that there wasn't much said on needing animators for this, but if you are ever of in need of one, please let me know if and how I can help out on this. :)

Awesome work!

Hi,

I don't know if you're looking for this kind of skills...

But I'm an orchestral music composer... and may be i could help?
I believe orchestral music could suit to your project.

You can visit my porfolio, in order to see what i can produce...

Hi Vinmuz,

Thank you for your interest! You have a really great portfolio. But unfortunately we have a composer right now but it's not an absolute certainty with him and there's still time till we start on music work so if anything changes I'll surely contact you and hope you'll be available then.

Cheers!

For anyone wondering, I just updated the first post for our immediate needs. It may (and probably will) change over time but right now our immediate needs are for people to do:

- Modeling
- Simulation

And for later:
- Sound Design / Sound Mixing

Hey Aziz,

Yeah we actually need another character modeler but not to sculpt new characters but to do retopology for the ones being already built. If you are okay with that, we would love to have you in our team. Or there are still more props to model if you are interested. Just send me an email at aserbest@gmail.com if you're interested.

Cheers,
Alican

Hi Everyone,
My name is Scott and I have been contributing to this project for the past few months as a prop modeler. We're going to be posting work-in-progress here on a semi-regular basis and I wanted to jump in and post what I have been working on. This is just a small part of all the work this incredibly productive team has been doing. Enjoy!

Pre-Viz Models
A big part of what we have been doing the past two months has been preparing a pre-visualization that we have been using to refine the story and block out the sets so we know where models will be in frame and how detailed they will need to be. This process has already been amazingly helpful in defining our short film.

I like to think of these models as 3D white-board sketches -- I spent 5-20 min on each model, which enabled me to finish 2-3 every day on the train to work. It helped that there are no UVs, no textures and absolutely no concern to good topology (as long as I could export it from Blender and it worked for Alican then it was golden).

Pipeline Tests
As part of the initial production phase of the project we wanted to clearly define the specs and pipeline so that a global set of individual artists, all with different modelling apps and workflows, can work together as seamlessly as possible. So, as part of the team has been working on the pre-viz, blocking out the action and story, I have been working on a few assets with the goal of making them as close as possible to final production-ready as possible. We're still considering whether this will be final art or not, but the work has been invaluable in driving us toward a conclusion on what our specs will ultimately be so that we do not need to go back and rework models at a later stage.

First are a couple of props from the concepts in Alican's original post:

http://www.bowzizzer.com/automat/automat_presentation_pipeline_tests.jpg

And, lastly, here is a work-in-progress of a pigeon that is intended to be used as a background element -- we will be using it to define the rigging and animation pipelines:

http://www.bowzizzer.com/automat/automat_presentation_pigeon.jpg

Look for more stuff from other team members soon!

Thanks,
Scott

Hey everyone,

Here are some more images of the models being built by different (but equally amazing) people. They are mostly Work In Progresses but still, might give you an idea and hope you'll like them.

I also updated the original post once again with the roles we need right now.

Hey everyone,

Here are two roles for which we are looking for people right now:

We are still in need of environmental modelers, especially for building models. So if you're interested, please feel free to contact me.

We also need an experienced character modeler for our main character (you can see his concept in the first post). We aim to start animations by June so we hope to have this character model ready by then.

Cheers and thanks,
Alican
