View Full Version : Are the bones in my character setup right?
LittleFenris 11-06-2003, 09:46 PM Here is a screenshot of my characters bones with the model in the background. I just need to know if the bones for the eyes and Fu-Man-Chu (sp?) are gonna be good for animating? I need to know how to have them move when I move/rotate the head bone and move the rest of the character. Do I just use IK to link them to the rest of the bones or should I actually connect them to one of the bones in skeleton chain?
Thanks

Just parent them to the headbone in layout. Then the eye bones will follow the head bone like you want

cool, i just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything horribly wrong setting this up. Its my first character I've ever set up for animating.

I guess noone else has any comments? Did Ayreon sum it up with the parenting comment? :) I just wanna make sure I'm going in the right direction with this bones setup for some serious animating. I am in the process of modeling and setting up these characters for a short film myself and a couple friends want to do. :buttrock:

Well, it looks like a pretty good set up to me. With good weight maps, this should work, but the real test is to convert them to bones, and do a motion test -- try deforming the model by moving the bones through their range of expected motion -- of course it will deform strangely if you have nto weighted it yet, but I find this test helps me see where problems may arise later... Of course you want to repeat that test when you have set up your weights...

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that. :wavey:
Also, what about the eyebrows...should I use bones for them or endomorphs? which do you think will be easier to control or give better control and results?

Well, if it was me, I'd use endomorphs, but someone els emight have a reason to use bones. If you make sliders for the endomorphs, it is easy to tweak the eyebrow positions when animating.

I agree the endomorph sliders will probably give plenty of control and be easier to deal with then bones. Thanks for the help.
