My exact predicament. I wanna just buy it but im having second thoughts about when the next version will come out. Not that I think its going to be a massive improvement on the currrent version at all ... theres not much to improve (cough cough)

Most companies are trying to keep on about an 18 month cycle (so I've heard). So I'd guess you still have about another year to wait.
Maya 6 when is it coming out?
Ive been asking the same question for Softimage XSI 4

We don't used Maya 5 yet :D, no need right now for a new version...
I think Alias trying to upgrade Maya 5 right now, until one or two years from now :hmm:
Based on Alias history, I think it will be at least another 4 to 6 months before we hear anything about the next version.
But buy it if you can or if you must. Otherwise, wait.

Thx for the repys peeps I can relax now. I ordered the unlimited student version and was kinda worried that the updates would be in a 6 month cycle for some reason .. well you know what they say theres no such thing as a stupid question just stupid people.
Maya 5.5 is supposed to be out in early spring.

Maya 4.5 to 5.0 was released under 7 months..
4.5 - September 13th || 5.0 - April 6th
I'd bet my left nad it gets released within this year, Alias have a lot of employees, and a smaller price, which means they need constant sales to 'feed the train'. 5.0 had more enhancement than other releases even with a smaller product cycle.. (had more bugs than usual though ;\ ), so one should welcome the faster cycle, and if you don't want to buy it, buy Maya 6 next year.. simple.

im curious what they'll be focusing on in this update... I honestly wish Mental Ray supported post process effects, and non-Collapsed SubD's, but i'm not worried about rendering; there are always work-arounds, and fake solutions... I want them to add / make better some Nurbs/Poly tools...and I wonder if its possible to make the fluids more effecient? hmm...

I hope the do have a lot of employees. Cuz after they closed our office in Santa Barbara, and well.. every other US development/sales office they had to get some new people. Non of my ex co-workers that I know of agreed to move to Canada, so now they stuck with one office there, and one in India (Mac version)

Well.. I saw their press release, stating they are one of the top employers in Canada (Top 100).. and their Jobs page hasn't that many available positions.. so I assume they have built up on staff again.
Bummer about your job though, your situation sounded familar, looking at your webpage, you are the guy I saw on Highend showing your 5th Element scene, I couldn't track it later on, glad I found it again, really nice work, Dennis, I'm sure you have found a new job with your talents.

Hello NUKE-CG! THanks for comments. I am freelanceing at the moment, but on my way for something stable. I didnt want to end up in a office of some big ass company and modelling for the rest of my life. So Im trying supervising for small productions and student films. Really fun job. Hopefully I will get on bigger project in the near future.

I know of many different companies that have moved work to india and canada first hand British Telecom and A.O.L are among them, so ive been there and done that it sux but hey thats life.
The big companies are moving a lot of work abroad to take advantage of low taxes and cheap labour amongst other things .. Remember a ferengi without profit is no ferengi at all.
What are you expecting from maya 6?
Who knows what Bill Buxton an co will cook up next ... someone needs to check thier dna they cant be human ... can they?

Well for all the people who don't want to buy a version and then have another one come out weeks/months later I strongly recommend that when you buy Maya, you kick the $1000 a year for the maintenence plan, that way whenever a new version comes out they simply send it to you. And 9/10 times if an update is released and you bought it withing a close time they will give you the next version free. When Alias dropped the prices they gave everyone who bought complete withing like 2-3 months (don't recall exactly, I fell like a week out of that deadline :( ) of the price drop a free upgrade to unlimited.

Bill Buxton hasn't been at Alias for a while. He left them over a year ago. He runs his own design company now.
