View Full Version : need help making a gun model in gmax
Dominic123 11-06-2003, 12:53 AM I am still doing my gun model in gmax. The problem is that I'm at the part of the clip and I'm using a cylinder to substract half of it to the clip. But when I substract the second cylinder to the clip the other one that I made before dissapears. How can I leave it there? Because I want to make 3.
I have a thread in the "genreal discussions" forum. I got 2 response. This one:
"cant you make as copies as you need then do ur booleans or whatever?"
and this one:
"Convert to editable mesh. As far as I know you can only have one boolian in the stack at once..."
I don't understand how making a copy could work. I just want the first curve from the cylinder to stay in the clip when I do the second one.
Also how can I convert to editable mesh???
Hope your guys understand what I mean. I can't post a attachement of a picture because the size is too big. It's a jpeg though so I don't know why.

model it in there.

Tims0l is right, booleans aren't a very clean way to model, but I think they're fine if you're just starting out and don't yet want to mess with manually modeling the indentation.
Here's how you can get the other indentations to work with boolean:
after you've made the first indentation, make sure you still have the clip selected, and again go to create panel -> geometry -> compound objects -> boolean. Basically you need to create a new boolean for each indentation you want to make.
Eventually you'll want to find other ways than booleans to model details like that. Booleans can produce unexpected and unpleasant results.
hope that helps

Now is there a way to copy those curves in the clip on the other side. Or will I have to do this all over again the other side?

Can someone please help me? I tried "clone" but it alwas clones the clip. I want to clone the curves I made in the clip so that I can put them on the other side faster.
Can someone also tell me how I can attach pictures in this post? I tried JPG GIF jPEG and those are to big. I don't know how to save my picture on the other formats. Can someone show me how?

slice your model in half and then use the symmetry modifier. no you only have to work on one site of your model!

How exactly can I slice the clip???
I went in the modifier drop down list then selected "slice". Then theres a square that appears in my view ports. So I moved it in the middle of the clip. The beside "slice" I clicked on "+" then I clicked on"slice plane". That doesn't seem to work. It didn't slice the clip.
The tutorial I'm fallowing sucks. It only tells me to do the other side like I did on 1 side. But there has to be a faster way.

there is a slice function when you work under edit poly.
-select the faces in the middle
-place the slice plane
-press the slice button
-select the half you dont need anymore and press delete
good luck

1. what face in the middle? You mean select the clip?
2. Then I went in the modifier drop down list and selected "slice" I clicked on the "+" near "slice" and selected "slice plane" Then I moved the slice plane in the middle of the clip This is what I'm suppose to do right?
3 Then you say to press the slice button. What slice button???
4. I pressed on delete on my kb and that deletes the clip, not half of it.
And why would I want to delete half of the clip? I want both sides to be the same. I don't want to delete anything.

you want to delete half of the clip because you want the other side to be the same.
max wil use the half you allready made and copy and at the same time weld it to the other side. ( this is done with the symmetry modifier)
all the questions you have look like you didnt collapse the model into a poly.
So do that and work in sub-object face mode then it will al become clear, I hope.

How can I collapse the model into a poly and how can I work in sub-object face mode?

Pressing F1 on my kb doesn't do anything in gmax. Is this a joke?

pressing f1 is for help!
well since it didnt work I once again will aid you. But plz try to look araund in the program on your own.
it is not very likely that every one one this forum will explain step by step what you have to do in max (dont know why I am still doing this... oh yes I am rendering and I am trying to fill up my time with it).
Plz try to have some basic knowledge from max doing tutorials and reading books about max, otherwise we just cant help you because you dont understand what we are talking about!!!
now you can right click for the quad menu there you will see convert to ----> poly
face sub-object is the 4th one from the left in your modifier tab. this will give you control over the "faces"!!
ok so now I think this will help you. and this is also the last time I will reply to this thread. next time plz gain some basic knowledge, I dont tell you this because I hate you or anything just some advice!
and...... your welcom!

I need documentations that will teach me all the basics of gmax.
Where can I find some? I know where I can buy books. But I want documantations that I can get for free online. For example: I want to know how to collapse the model into a poly, how to change to sub-object face mode etc.............
I opened gmax and went in the "help" menu. There are no documations like I want. I also did a google search and I can't find what I want. Can someone help me please?

Can someone please tell me where the Material Editor is please?
In the help documents I found it says:
Main toolbar > gmax Material Editor
It's not there. Maybe I have the wrong version, I don't know.
Anyone know a place where I can chat live on the net about 3d modeling stuff?

well, first of, if you dont have the help files, but im guessing you do, you can get them from the same place you downloaded gmax.
just pressing m on the keyboard should bring up the material editor
