Title: Smurf Sighting
Name: Nate Hallinan
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

What if Smurfs were real?

The Smurf is actually the result of a symbiotic relationship between two organisms. We believe that Smurfs put their 'embryos' in the button of a developing mushroom. From a distance, Smurfs seem like they are wearing a hat and pants but as you can see this is a fallacy. The fungus provides camouflage and protective epidermal layers for the creature, while the creature provides nutrients and mobility for the spreading of spores.

Smurfs are believed to be a hunter gatherer society. As you can see, this little guy is returning from a successful venture. It is generally difficult to spot a Smurf; they are very apprehensive and cunning. Sadly though, it is rumored that they are hunted for their medicinal properties. It's hard to determine but it is thought that there are not many colonies of Smurf left.

Wow! I love this interpretation of the Smurfs. If smurfs were real, then I believe that this is what they would look like. I love this conceptual creature design with the beautiful attention to detail, texture, anatomy and so forth. The mushroom topped head and layering legs are great. Even the face is unique and convincing. The background is beautiful with great textures, colors and details. The disproportionate, but convincing, hands and arms are very interesting. I love the snail and blackberry as well. Perhaps the back foot could be a little more planted to the root (something about it doesn't seem like it's really touching the ground completely). The black eyes and almost cat-like nose is interesting. He looks like a competent hunter/gatherer. I really love this piece. It deserves a proud spot in your portfolio. Keep it up. Great job!

Amazing work mate! I love the realistic approach, reminds me of the artwork of Rien Poortvliet. A Dutch artist who wrote several books, illustrated with paintings., with realistic interpretations of gnomes and trolls & such.

Wow, I don't usually post on these. But this is so smart, and so well excecuted. I could see a "smurf movie for grown ups (and old kids)" working well like this. Love the fringe of cells that makes the "pant-line". Kudos!:applause:

Thanks guys! Yeah, one of the main goals was definitely make something visually appealing for everyone. (not just kids) If something like this was made into a film I think it would be cool to use a story that had the tone like Where the Wild Things Are; adventurous, intense and fun. (but that's just me...) :)

Am I supposed to believe this is a 2d piece???? That is too incredible!! =)

This is a completely realistic painting, I love it!

My only negatives are mostly for the comments, not the piece or artist. I don't think the idea is "realistic" or "logical" as many have stated. The idea of fauna DNA somehow fusing with flora does not fit well for me. I'd believe very small people over some animal mushroom. Also, the concept of an animal /human mushroom person has been drawn a lot since Toad from Super Mario was introduced. So... I don't think it's altogether original. But that's the commenters not the artist.

I really love the whole scene and want to see more!

i very much like this design. My only critique lies in the texturing of the skin and fungus that makes up his pants. His skin looks a little too much like a flat color with not enough subtle variation like most mammalian skin. His fungus pants look fantastic but i would expect him to still be showing some toes of some kind with how thin the fungus on his feet looks. Maybe make it look thicker or just show the slightest hint that the fungus is concealing anatomical feet. Again, i LOVE your design! :buttrock:
