View Full Version : mirroring blend shape targets??

Hi all,

anybody know of an easy way to mirror a blend shape target? ie, say i model a target for "right eye squint", anyone know how to make a mirror copy so i have a "left eye squint" aswell??? If you jsut do a negative scale across that doesnt work. Surely there is a way! :scream:

I'm betting there are a zillion possibilities here but I'll outline some that I've used in the past.

The Snap Method:
This may seem clunky but it can go really fast and works well in a pinch.

Dupe your base model and make the right side target.
Dupe the right side target, scale it negatively so that it flops and place it on a reference display layer in wireframe mode.
Dupe the base model again to use as the left side.
Use the move tool in point snap mode to quickly snap the left side verts to the flopped right target reference model.
Delete the flopped reference and repeat for each symmetrical target pair.

The Pre-Mirror Method:
You have to plan to do this before you start making your targets

Start with your base shape and make two dupes for each target pair
Flop one from each pair with the scale inversion method
Position each pair so that they are perfectly aligned
Connect them up as blendShape targets
In the BlendShape panel, set both targets to full strength (1)
Edit one side of each pair by ALWAYS drag selecting your verts (cuz you'll be selecting and modifying both sides at once!)
Watch as targets for both sides of the face are simultaneously

Cheers for the reply. I actually found a script on highend that works a treat :) its called "mirrorshape" if you are interested. You dont have to do any re modelling to get your mirror target, mighty nice time saver :thumbsup:

See also the just released smartVtx script. It offers all sorts of mirror functions such as mirror of selection, add mirror to selection, match mirror vertex, swap mirror vertex, reset vertex level tweaks, etc...
