View Full Version : The Neverhood sequel HELP NEEDED!!!
mindless 11-05-2003, 08:56 AM :wavey: Hey people, i had this idea for a long time, but noone seemed to be interested in it.
Has anyone played this brilliant quiest called The Neverhood?
Well i have, and i can tell you it's one of the most magnificent quests i've ever played. So when i found out that "The Neverhood Team" split up, i was pretty upset about it, because that means there WILL NOT BE A NEVERHOOD II:cry: ... sniff
The original game was plain old clay animation in 256 colors, but the sequel i think could be best done in 3d pre-rendered. If you feel interested, i need some:
1. 1-3 modelers(i am. 6 years xp in 3dsmax&vray)
2. 2 concept artists(although i've made some concepts myself )
3. 1-2 coders(damn it's so hard to find a decent coder nowdays...) (actually i need scripters, since the game will be realised in an other Engine, free and pretty cool, called AGS)
4. musicians... need the same idiotic music as in the first one...
People, i'm too far away from the thought that i can finish this on my own, so anyone PLEEEEASE help.
Come to think of it, we'll be starting from scratch, so any help will be highly appreciated

I'm all ears.
But, the most important thing is that it's gonna be a Non - commercial fan-fiction release. It's done for the game, not the money.
At the moment i'm trying to sort things out about what engine should be used because the net's full of crap  and something valuable can hardly be found. Here 's a link to a good page full of game engines (http://members.tripod.com/gdata010/engines.htm) and the S.L.U.D.G.E. Game engine (http://www.hungrysoftware.com/#/tools/sludge/engine.html) , that is pretty good, and so far i like it the most
and this one is dedicated to isometric engines :http://www.isometrix.org/engines.htm
So much for the engines. Whaddya say about "The Neverhood:Revolutions"
:D
Well, your turn.

Thanks for the info hmc4me but i'm orienting the game trowards 2d-pre rendered with sprites&stuff. Everybody's jumping to 3D, well i dont want to. It's out of the question that it's gonna be easier to create the whole thing, but... Take Simon The Sorcerer 3D for instance:thumbsdow it was pretty bad out there... And classic point 'n click quests have some kind of charm, that can't be reproduced in 3D(i guess). Anyway thanks for the advice
:wavey: And now i have an ANNOUNCEMENT to make:
Beautiful, tallented, ambitious, pretty, smart and gifted animators wanted for genetic experiments.
Seriously people, good character animators are very welcome.
If anyone can reproduce Clayman's twisted walk cycle in 3d i'll be the happiest man on Earth.
(we got pretty good beer here in Bulgaria. God i have a terrible hangover...)

Last idea-AGS (http://www.agsforums.com/) . Sounds quite good. Supports 16bit color & 800x600 wich is satisfying. I'd prefer 24bit, but... Anyway If anyone has an idea about a better engine, don't hesitate to share it with me. I also found AGAST (http://www.allitis.com/agast/). It Seems nice too. For those, that have done this before i bet i'm reinventing the bycicle, but it's my first time, so all help and advices are kindly appreciated!

So, we'll be making the first test recordings in a couple of days :buttrock: Here (http://www.mp3now.ru/archive/get.asp?file=2203) you can download a piece of the soundtrack of the Original to get the picture

Finally got apiece the storyline basics :D:
First The Characters:
Klayman(good old Klayman)
Hoborg(Good older Hoborg)
Wille(he lives, yes)
Robot Bill(where colud we be without him)
Klogg
The Crowd(all of the other ClayGuys)
:So the story begins some time after Klogg's death, where things have settled
down a bit.
Klayman is Hoborg's best friend, AND Loyal servant. He's quite
happy with his new friends(The Crowd) and lives a nice peacefull life. :applause:
Untill one day a stack of flyers drops from the sky, advertising a new world, a different world.(Our world)The pamphlet advertises a portal, that can take them to this world, and it seems to be a belonging of GGOLK Inc. from the Real World. All of the sudden The Croud packs and leaves for a field trip to TRW.
After a couple of days they return, carrying all sorts of gadjets(Walkmans, Sunglasses, Nintendos, An APPLE and such stuff). Well everybody seems infected with the new stuff and pretty soon life in the Neverhood begins to change.
Good old Willie has a Biiig Garden(called "Biiig Garden") where he grows all sorts of wierd stuff. Burp apples, pop-your-eyes-out fruits, juicy my-hand-got-ten-times-bigger strawberries(in the middle of the garden, wich is positioned where the Weasel used to live, lies the Burp Tree)AND most important Life Seeds. So Willie's fine.
Robot Bill, is specialised in clockmaking and now The Neverhood has a Clock Tower.(I got some pretty wierd ideas about the clock, share yours =)
Klogg:twisted:...well Klogg, actually survived the gun blast, but was hiding untill now. He,s obsessed with the idea to open a permanent portall between The Neverhood and The Real World(and this won't be so good, because people in the hood are getting nervous, they start to fight and so on...). Well guess who's gotta stop him.
The storyline lacks depth because it's not really finised yet, so any suggestions about it's further development will be a drop of fresh water.
More: The Neverhood: Revolutions site will soon be up(i hope...). Heheh.
welll... and... humm... Ah! I'm starting to sketch things out, so it' won't be an empty start. We'll be stealing Mucho form the old neverhood, because we need to reproduce some exact locations(the garden, Robot Bill's palce, Willie's tower) so i'm starting to take screenshots of the game. What's more, is that i'll have to take a complete snapshot of Klayman's walk cycle, so we can reproduce it. AND i got a almost perfect Klayman model, but if you have a model too, mail it to me so we can compare them and choose the better one.
Well, so much from me people, i'm gonna make myself a breakfast and think things over

As far as i'm informed, fanfiction is not illegal:D Take a look at the numerous Space Quest & King's Quest sequels out there, no one has sued them sof far, so what the hell! No i'm joking. Anyway, anything we do will be non-profit, i mean we aren't gonna sell the game, and that's as far as the big money machies are conerned. Don't worry, all we need is more'n more talented people, and especially someone to help me with the plot. Check out the working pre-alpha, to get at least a basic idea of what i'm talking about. http://3dmindgame.hit.bg/Images/Personal/NVH2v0.23bSFX.exe. Sorry about the big gap people, i've just been buissy the past couple of weeks, and i'll be away for 2 days, but after i come back i'm in vacation and i'll work like a DOG for this project because it's not going anywhere this way. I'm almost done with the storyboard(all the stuff is in schematic order, it just takes tame to refine it):banghead: So roll up your sleeves and start brainstorming. Btw, DFGFX what's happening with the Klayman model? We'll be needing it, i hope it's near completion.

Hi ,my name is Daniel Osadtsuk I live in Toronto ,Canada and i would like to work on this game.Ihave previously worked on 2 other games ,so i know what im doing and how the development process goes. I am a 3d animator ,although i can model I prefer to animate. So you can see some stuff i played around with at http://osadkid.bravepages.com/ please dont mind the camera work on test 1 and 2 plus the pipo finger test 1 but i fixed the camera in test 2 of pipo's fingers. But just know that i have many more test i created ,if you wish to see more please contact me at osadkid@37.com .Thnaks for your time and consideration.
P.S.=at the moment i am trying to get into as many projects as possible for my portfolio. So it would be great if i could do some minor work or big work is great aswell!

I'm impressed with what is done so far, I'm kinda buisy right now with another project but as soon as I'm done count me in.

I'm sorry for the delay of my responces but my mailbox is extremely overflooded with spam... Anyway, i'd be happy to have any of you work along, although i myself don't work pretty much on this project... But what i really need is some help with the soryboard. I need someone ot help me place things in order, so the actual work can begin. I'm eager to start the mind-blasting 3d modelling, but please, understand that i need some help before that.
As for what Michael Voeller proposed, it's not such a bad idea, but i'm not sure wether i can resist the temptation to go vector... but i believe yes. Anyway, the Director products have the bad habit of not running on different computers. And the AGS has very "cool" sys req's so i belive it's better. Thanks for the idea anyway, if you have any other good ideas, i'll be glad to take a look at them.
HAPPY NEW YEAR PEOPLE! I WISH YOU A VERY CREATIVE TIME!

Yes, i agree with that, and i was enthusiastic about doing The neverhood: revolutions in calymation, but i faced some problems. First of all, claymation requires a substantial amount of money for a start, and secondly the set must be located somewhere, wich eliminates the possibility of synchronised teamwork. Therefore i decided that we could make a very good imitation of claymation using 3d techniques :)
I'm running through my exams right now, so if everything goes OK, and i start working before september, there should be enough time to finally revive the neverhood project. Hurrah! :D Best of luck to me, hope we work out something soon :)

That would be far more than wonderful! I'm really inspired by the Neverhood music and it's one of the factors that stimulated me to start this project. I saw your site, or mostly i heared it, and i'm fascinated!
Although i wish to make certain that you know, that our project is completely open and free and the content is mainly contributions from mine and other enthusiastic artists' free time, therefore if You enter this project you should not expect any commercial feedback, since i'm not expecting to make any profit of this game, unless something radically changes in the course of progress, of wich You will be notified. But for now you can sleep without worrying about it :)
Phew, this almost sounds like the GPL, but i wanted to make sure everything's been made clear :) Anyway, i assume that you've played the original game and have caught the mood of the psychedelic/dixieland(whoever knows what...) soundtrack it presents. My original idea was to stick to the original style.
If you could make a demo track in this style, it would be well well appreciated :). I'm thinking to include some occasions in wich Clayman gets sent to our world, so i think that semi-serious-urban-ambient music would be fit for these places.
We really DOOOO need new music, so your help would be invaluable :)

Ok, here i've upoaded a the first remastered and improved version of the project, compiled and working, with 2 (two!) rooms :) Anyway, the interface is a dev. version so it won't be the same in the final release, or even in further versions since i'm planning to remake it really soon. Sorry about the bad sprites, the walk cycle's been ripped from an animated .gif in order to get a grip on the proportions. For those of you new to the native AGS interface, i'll tell you that right-clicking switches between interaction modes(walk, look, interact, talk, etc.)
