Dell makes two laptops I would recomend: They are for the most part the same system except for the graphics chip. Here's the dealio:
The Inspirion 8200 laptop and the Precision laptops are both basically the same and you could set either of them up to be identicle to the other. The only real difference is that the Inspirion 8200 uses the GeForce 4GO with 64MB RAM, the Precision uses the Quaddro 4GO with 64MB RAM. As far as which one to get, that depends entirely on the workload you plan on using it for. If you plan on mostly using the laptop for gaming, and other regular application and only occasionally using it for 3D work (like when your PC is doing a long render) then I would recomend getting the Inpirion 8200. If however, you plan on doing 3D work whenever you are away from the PC or you plan on taking the laptop to work/school to do 3D work while you are doing other stuff then I'd recomend you get the Precision laptop.

As far as performance of the two systems I'd say that the GeForce 4GO has about the same overall performance as the desktop GeForce 3 ultra/titanium does. If you need any more 3D viewport performance that what a GeForce3 desktop card would give you then your only real option is to go with the Quadro 4GO.

I'm in the same boat as you right now. I'm basically trying to decide how much work I'll actually be doing on the laptop, or weather I just want it as a second PC so I have something to work with while I have a long render going on or I'm away from my home for an extended period of time.

Hope that helps.
P.S. Neither of these laptops are cheap. Expect to spend about $3200 to $4000 on either of them depending on the setup.

While I know you said "preferably" a nvidia I figured since it wasn't an absolute I'd mention www.alienware.com It has the fastest laptop I've seen anywhere at 2.4 ghz p4 and with the 7500 radeon 64meg and up to a gig of ram that would be one heckuva mobile workstation.

This link might help. It's a 3 page article by Steffan Haeberle, on his personal quest for a good laptop for 3DSMAX.

I bought an Dell Inspiron 8200 a couple of months ago and I can't complain. It's just tough watching the prices fall after you do pull the trigger and get one.

It's really cool to be sitting in a park, bookstore, or wherever you want and be able to kick on a compter and do your thing.

If you do get a Dell, you can save a couple hundred and buy your RAM from Crucial.com (http://www.Crucial.com) instead of Dell.

Hmm ... may not have a nVidia card, but you can get a Compaq Presario 2800 PIV 1.4 with 32mb Radeon 7500 (upgradable to 64mb) for a resonable price (around 1700 USD) ... and the thing looks much sleeker and better than the Dell Inspiron =)

Same spec costs 700 USD more here in Aust. :thumbsdow

I have a thread I started a few days ago where I will review and compare a laptop (Dell 8200 w/1.8GHz P4, 64MB GeForce4 Go, 512MB RAM) that I just ordered with my workstation PC (dual 1.2GHz Athlons, 64MB GeForce3, 1GB RAM) that I've had for a while now. I figured I'd want to do this anyway for myself, so I figured I'd post my findings here for you guys to check out.
