View Full Version : Easiest way to make a circular hole in a polygon object?

Hey folks. I am doing a Leggo animation of a helicopter building itself. THis is my first solo project without reference so I am a little lost. I have built several pieces and really didn;t have many problems. Now I am needing to make a circular hole in a polygon object that I have created. WHat would be the simplest way of doing that? Thanks for any help you all may offer.

use polygon boolean operations.

Which can be a real pain in the neck sometimes, but for this instance, probably.

The next easiest might be extruding then deleting faces.

WHen I do boolenas both object just disappear for some reason. I'll fiddle with the extruding like you said and get back to you guys.

I tried deleting and extruding faces but the faces are triangular and i need to take out a square chunk of the triangular face and then place the cylinder like object in the middle. I can get the cylinder part there but i need to remove the square part of the faces to mount it in.

For the boolean, first delete construction history on your two objects. Then, you need to just try different combinations of selection and boolean operation. You have three different booleans to choose from and I think for two of the three if not all of them the selection order DOES matter. So if they are disappearing, try mixing it up. But deleting a construction history is always a good idea before doing things like this and it may solve your problem straight out.

You could always make a nurbs plane, project a nurbs circle onto the plane, trim it, then convert to polys and patch that into your existing mesh.

Well, here it goes one way to do it without boolean, because i guess we should only use booleans in ultimatly need, to make things safier.

MAn I love you guys <tear...tear>

Thanks a lot Victor. That is very helpful. I am gonna give it a whirl here in a second. I think I should have maybe planned a little better for the hole in the beginning. My order of operations was a little screwy and If I would have just did this before modeling the whole piece it wouldn;t have been a problem at all. Needless to say I have definately learned from this littel experience.

ANd on the boolean note, I really hate those freaking things. I tried what whiterabbit said but they still just disappear. Those littel boogers are frustrating!

Thanks a ton for the help guys.

PS what software do you use for those screen captures?
