Hmmm.... that's great and all, but I'm kinda depressed that handhelds are entering the 3d era. Now the focus may get back to getting the most out of the engine, rather than where it should be, on the gameplay. :hmm:

When I first heard they were going to make the psp I didn't know what to expect. I love sony and their playstation products, but to make a portable unit with the power they were talking about seemed like it would be a huge portable ( like the game gear ).

I know that this design is probably not final or even what it will look like, but I hope at least that it signifies that the final unit will be SMALL and nice looking.

BTW, I am equally concerned with the quality of the hardware and software made for it, because in the end it will be the games that will make or break this console. But I also feel that making a cool and small looking portable can be half the battle. I would hate to see them end up with a unit that was as large as the game gear.

I'll certainly be picking one of these babies up the minute they're released.

Last I heard it was supposed to be capable of playing some sort of DVD movies (maybe that's the reason for the widescreen), and DivX movies, plus MP3s...or did I just make all that up in my head?

Exactly. I don't play a lot of games these days, but I sure wouldn't mind seeing a few more like Zelda: A Link to the Past. Or Super Mario Brothers 3. Classic gameplay. 2d. Pixels, not polygons.

I bet with today's hardware, there could be some really beautiful 2d games done.

Yes, last I heard Sony is planning on releasing media on their UMD platform for the psp, such as movies and music. Also the psp will be able to play mp3s via memory sticks. I think I have heard that you will also be able to play video off the memory sticks as well.

I personally am skeptical of whether or not releasing movies on the UMD format would be viable or not. I would love to see a way of burning/writing your own UMDs. Perhaps through the psp itself like a Minidisc player.

Sony is saying that the psp will not only be a gaming console but what they call the walkman of the twenty-first century. An all-in-one media device.

I can't wait for this thing to come out!

Sleek sexy concept, but has serious ergonomics/workability problems.. If they're going for the analogue controller, I hope they can figure out a way to keep that bit clean.. pockets can get mighty dusty..

If the screen is as big as I think it is, and that's accurate size... I don't think it's going in any but the largest pockets anyways.
