actionfigure 11-04-2003, 07:34 PM Well..Im new..I have seen all the tutorials out there including the video tutorials. I still dont understand how to use C4d..I mean.. I do know some basic stuff but EVERY time I try a tutorial..I end up not finishing it cuz it leaves out steps that Im not familar with.. All the tutorials I have tried are for beginners..I might not be looking in the right place. I dont know. Even when I try to use the bevel..it only stretches the object not gving me the control to for it the way I want too. This may sound funny but I do consider myself a faster learner...I dont know why the tutorials ALWAYS leave out IMPORTANT steps that I need in order to learn C4d.

well some advice I can give you is this, play with the controls and play with them alot.
If bevel or extrude or inner extrude or anything for that matter doesn't work what should you do?
simple go to the attributes manager and the tool manager and play with values till youhave something resembling what you want.
Don't be afraid to try negative values either. If all else fails hold down the command shift alt or option keys with the tool selected.
Basicly if its not working like its supposed to the answer is simple, there are a few basic modifiers for all the tools in every app, just try them alter some values don't give up. In a short amount of time you will have it working perfectly.
Thats all the advice I can give at this time, also post up some WIPs okay? that way if something is REALLY stumping you, everyone here can help you with it.

Sometimes it can be much more confusing to follow tutorials rather than simply playing around at random... JIII has a good point there... So people say that shaking it more than twice means you're playing with it - that doesn't apply to 3D software, so go shake it like you never have done before!
Suddenly, it all goes 'boom' and you have figured it out.
BTW, is C4D your first 3D experience all in all, or have you been fiddling with other softs previously? Because if you are entirely new to 3D as such (and not only C4d), then rest assured that it takes a lot of time and effort to get the hang of it. But it'll come to ya! Just keep trying!

and read all 3d related stuff you can get hold of - no matter if itīs software related (Max,LW,XSI,Maya etc.) - the basic principles are the same.

I know what you mean about trying some of the tutorials with no luck also. I gave up on them and just found my own path. Didn't take to long either. Just jump in and explore. Try some things out. You will get. I must say I have had more success on my own then with the tuts.

All i can say is don't be afraid to ask ;)
www.Cinema4d.nl has loads of beginner tutorials with steps explained in a detailed manner. Just check under uk articles there. If you feel a bit more comfortable with the modeling tools of cinema 4d you can try modeling something more advanced like a car. There's a complete tutorial about that on www.c4dportal.com. You will find most tutorials listed there as well + many other tutorials in our forums.
Start out with simple stuff, like modeling items on your desk.

I like to just make a cube, give it some basic divisions (2,2,2), then carve the sucker up!
If you're having trouble extruding, or moving polies, once you select one, try either clicking off the axes you don't want or just drag the axis handle in the direction you want to exreude.
And ask, ask, ask...everyone is VERY hlpful here...and many have been using Cinema for years...
